Hello,

I have a private range on my parents property and I tend to pick the shot up lead out of the backstop. I don't really want to just leave the lead there for contamination purposes (I can't get it all but every little bit helps). Anyway I am not quite sure what to do with it. I don't cast my own and don't really want to.

I could scrap it at the junk yards, but that seems like a waste of pretty good lead that could otherwise go towards casting.

Would it just be better to sell it here on the high road to casters? Would I have to melt it down to get rid of the copper jackets? Or would my best bet just be to scrap it at the local junk yard? What is a fair price per pound selling for scrap and selling for casting?

I cast almost exclusively from range lead. I will buy from you all you can send. I have been paying .30 a pound for as-is and .60 a pound for smelted. I will pay for shipping on top of that. USPS has a 70 pound box to ship in for 9.80, and that includes the box.

well i guess I will sell via THR when I get more. Out of curiosity, do most casters have a problem with plated rounds? I would think they wouldn't smelt well without smashing them with a hammer first, or something like that.

You are right, I have a chunk of railroad iron and a hammer. If I get some that are instact, I whack them. The plating is very thin, the lead is soft, not a problem. The jacketed bullets are open on the back and a little shake gets the lead out.

Well this is more of a long term question. Right now i don't have enough to make it really worth anyone's time. However once i get enough I will recycle the lead back to shootists instead of giving it to china via junk yards.
