Lots of pro gun people advise one to keep a lawyer on retainer in case you are involved with a self defense shooting. Sounds like a good idea. What is the best way to find a pro gun lawyer?

Thanks!

Michael

I resemble that remark.;) Join a private range or gun club of any size and you'll eventually find some by asking around. Many of my "instant buddies" seek free advice on everything from restraining orders to workers' comp within a couple of weekends of one of my friends betraying to them what I do for a living. :banghead:

Paying a retainer to a criminal lawyer is probably going a bit too far for 99.999% of the shooting public. Just remember that you have the right to remain silent and you have the right to an attorney. Use the Fifth amendment until your Sixth Amendment rights are observed. If you say nothing, they cannot use your silence against you in any criminal proceeding or inquiry.

None of this should be construed as legal advice in any way.

mrstang01, how are you using "on retainer"?

Pay me money not to do anything else but wait for your call?:D Or just get to know one so if Problem #2 surfaces you know who to call?

It's like finding a physician or dentist or auto mechanic. Ask around. Now, since your involved in the "gun culture" you probably have no need for a tilecrawler (i.e., criminal defense attorney--have to be in and out of court so you crawl along the tile to the various courts). Thus, you have little experience in looking for one since your nephew Seth got popped for Minor in a Tavern at the entertainment club.

Word to the wise, the guy that did your will or your divorce may not (or may be [especially in smaller counties]) the right guy for this kind of work. The guy I'll call is an honest to goodness, "aw shucks, I'm just a country boy" type who has a general practice but is one sharp cookie.

As well, what do you want done? A detailed explanation of the gun laws of Kentuc? What do/expect if you get in a fight? An appearance filed and a motion to reduce your bond? Someone to represent you in the admin and civil parts of Problem #2? It all depends.

A good starting point may be what was suggested at TFL. Go to your county courthouse and ask the security bailiffs (usually guys in Sheriff uniforms that "guard" the courthouse). They know the sharp knives from the dull knives as they see them every day, they talk with them, see the trials or hearings they do, and the judges confide in them at times.

HTH. Not legal advice and all.

El Tejon,

Yep, shoulda worded that better. I did mean, have a lawyer's card handy so after a shooting (hope to never have this happen, but like a boyscout, better to have it and not need it...yada, yada), I don't have to call the lawyer with the fanciest ad in the phone book (or worse yet, wind up with an underpaid P.D., who could care less about me and my problem).

That way, after I tell the responding officers, "I was in fear for my life, and I fired to stop his/her/it's attack. I'm kind of shaken up right now, and would prefer to talk to my lawyer before saying anything else Officer.", I know which lawyer to call.

If you are gonna need a criminal lawyer for a self defense shooting, you simply want the BEST criminal lawyer in your area whether he is pro gun, anti gun or whatever his politics are.

Join in the way to do it..asks the cops, bailiffs or whatever...see whose getting the high profile cases in your area...

Also try the NACDL..

BluesMan,

I keep getting: Unable to contact server on that link. Can you verify it please?

Thanks!

I'd go to your state supreme court's website, and find their decisions database. Most states have them. Then search through the decisions for cases involving gun permits and similar topics. The decisions should list the attorneys, and you can see who represents whom advocating what position, and also whether they won or not.

Or, just ask around - other attorneys, cops, etc.
