Trickery... most gun owners support some (EXISTING) gun laws, including background checks to keep felons from buying guns, but he makes it SOUND like the NRA opposes ALL gun laws.

He did not ask if gun owners support NEW or FURTHER restrictions.

Their figures are actually pretty representative of what other, larger and more official polls have found. While the majority of Americans do not favor any new gun control measures, an even greater majority believes in Criminal background checks for purchases. Most of us who don't, have a reason; We believe anyone too dangerous to be trusted with a gun shouldn't be trusted with the public in general.

Of course, the issue is more complicated than that. You can't lock every potentially dangerous person up for life.

The upshot to mandatory background checks is that it tends to make gun owners a uniquely law-abiding crowd, which is something we can throw back at the anti's. When they start crowing about anybody, even children, being able to go and buy a firearm any time they want, we can point out all the disqualifying factors to shut them up. If the debate continues to the point that one of the anti's knows a thing or two about gun laws, then we may have to make some concessions, such as the fact that, under federal law, yes, a 5 year old can privately purchase a shotgun or rifle and lawfully possess it anywhere that another local law doesn't prohibit it. Not that anyone in their right mind would sell a child a gun, but I digress; Most anti's know very little about the gun laws that do exist, so just provide them with a link showing what all the 4473 form and NICS check entails and it usually humbles them (to a certain extent, anyway).

Statistically speaking, a poll/survey could use a sample size like that to give a valid result, assuming there was no bias in the survey pool. Most polling companies use 400 or 1000 people in their samples. A sample size of 1000 will give you a confidence interval of +/-3% 19 times out of 20 (95%).

The poll seems to be valid. What is not valid is the spin/misrepresentation of the poll's contents by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. I also find it more than distasteful that they sat on this research for several months, and then trotted it out to try and capitalize on a tragedy.

The poll would simply seem to identify that most gun owners seem to support enforcing the rules that are already on the books.
