what about a 1200 winchester they come around on gunbroker in riot cinfiguration too,i miss mine,it was a super slick action and shot great, said"riot on the barrell.friend offered a outragous amount of cash for it plus a argentine mauser, now i have a short mossburg 500,it is a good gun too.

You can WORD it anyway you like. Anyway that makes you feel comfortable. But anyone that's shot a shotgun much if at all knows it is AIMED at the target, IF you want to maintain control and hit that target... AIM.

Only for stationary targets like deer or turkey. For moving targets, ANYONE that has actually shot them knows a shotgun is pointed, never aimed. In fact, you shouldn't be looking at the bead at all. but your target.....;)

In my opinion the ideal H/D shotgun Is a Mossberg 500 with a 18 1/2" barrel in .410 ga.
Don't poo-poo the .410. At close range it is deadly, and the recoil is such that a wife/girlfriend could use it too. It's also easier to get back on target that a 12 ga.
If you choose a Pistol Grip or stock is personal preference. A full stock is great for hunting, a P/G is easy to store and easy to move around in a house.

I'm no longer a fan of the 20 ga. since their lighter weight makes the recoil similar to a 12 ga.

I have a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga. Love it. I'm thinking of adding the .410 as a bedside gun.

It's probably already been said in this thread, but there is no round that will reliably stop a bad guy and yet not go through many layers of drywall, for a shotgun or otherwise. I'm sorry but it just doesn't exist. People are made of tougher stuff than drywall and so in order to penetrate deep enough into a bad guy to reach vital organs, which needs to be done to stop someone, it also must be able to penetrate many, many layers of drywall.

Basic rule of thumb is to simply pick whatever is most effective and then when the time comes, be sure of your target and what's behind him/her. You could use birdshot which should only penetrate a few layers of drywall, but that absolutely will not reliably stop someone. There's a small chance it may stop them, but if you're worried about your safety, are you willing to leave it up to chance?

Use buck or slugs and be mindful of where you're shooting.

Better late than never?

Probably too late to weigh in on this, but having owned a Mossy 500, it's a nice shotgun, especially if you pistol grip it for tight quarters. They don't have a whole lot of class out of the box, but they do the job well. And remember, bird shot is for birds. Some hopped up idiot may not even be phased by 7 & 8 unless he's point blank.

In terms of buying one... I would highly suggest Backpage.com, depending on the state you live in. Shotguns of various flavors can be found in the Sport Equipment section, and you can normally pick up a used mossy of some type for much cheaper than retail if you're on a budget. Hell, that's where I sold mine out here in AZ after trying through the used retail channels and getting lowball prices.

Goes for other firearms too. If you haven't picked it up yet, give backpage a glance.
