I just purchased a 4" Nickel Python that the owner said was unfired. Serial # 390XX indicates mfg in 1964 if I understand the charts correctly. I can see no evidence of it having been fired but then I am not an expert.. Was in a plastic Colt box which I assume was not original in '64. Was 1K too much? He also had a blue 8" for $800 which looked like new.

I think the gun you describe would sell for $1,200-$1,500 or more if offered on the auction sites.

A few months ago I paid $1150 for a 4" blue one that had been shot a little bit. No cardboard box, papers, etc. I'm happy with my new range gun.

Does your gun have the correct stocks for that period? Let me see if I can find the link to the pics of the different types.

No matter what, you paid about $100 or $200 more than what the blue beater guns are going for and basically stole it.

Those are fair prices these days.....unless you just luck into a deal somewhere.

I've been watching Pythons on Gunbroker lately. "NIB" examples have Buy Now! prices of $2,000+, with high reserves (nobody's buying), and lightly used examples are priced around $1,300. Nickel should be worth more than blue, and you probably didn't want the 8" barrel over the 4" I'm guessing.
I would assume it's been fired at least a little, but 60s Pythons are vintage. That's a good deal for those of us unlucky enough to be snakebit.

JohnBT: Thanks for the link on the grips. I wasn't aware of all the differences in the grips. I am looking at the link from work but will take a closer look at home and try to post a picture.

Just look for signs that it has been finished. Other than that, I'd say shoot it and have fun. If you're happy with the price then that's all that matters.

"Thanks for the link on the grips"

You're welcome. I meant to put in my earlier post that my blue 4" is from 1967. It was worth a little more to me being that old. I already had a 1991 blue 6-inch shooter and wanted a 4" from the '60s.

Watching Python gun/grip/box prices on e-bay and gunbroker is great fun at times - like during movie commercials and halftime shows.

Due to ISP problems I have had a problem posting pictures. Hope this works.

JohnBT: Per the link you sent the grips appear to correct for the period. The underlug is hollow, is there a significance to that.

Nice snag.
The gun looks all correct other than the plastic box you mentioned.
The 1/2 moon style stocks/grips are correct for that vintage.
Hollow underlugs were only on the very early years of Pythons.
Congrats again.

Never had an ATM card and never will. Always carry some "emergency cash" for just such occurrences.
