So far to date the only thing I have loaded is 9mm pistol for me and .223 for my daughters rifle. Well the bullets I load for her have been the Hornady V-Max 55gr no cannelure.

I'm getting ready to start loading for my 7mm rem mag. It is the Hornady BTSP 139gr with cannelure. I was checking to see what the OAL was for touching the lands. The measurement for that was 3.300. I scooted the bullet in a little to give me a start point of 3.280. Well I noticed that the entire cannelure was still just above the case mouth.

My question is, does at least a little bit of the cannelure have to be below the case mouth or can the whole thing be just above the case mouth. I do not plan on crimping any because I am planning for the neck tension to hold the bullet in.

The OAL of 3.280 does fit my magazine just fine to with no feeding issues. My rifle is a bolt action.

If you are not going to crimp into the cannelure, you may ignore its location. Where it fetches up when you seat to where you want to be does not matter.

Yes sir, the cantalure's sole purpose is to give the case mouth an "area" to crimp into....if you are not crimping, disregard its location
