Question regarding Schuster gas plug for m1 garand

First post here guys. I recently got a Schuster DCM Adjustable gas plug for my old m1 garand. I pulled out the old gas plug and began putting in the new one and I noticed it was extremely hard to screw it in. I screwed it in a bit more than half way, but there are still a little thread showing. I am afraid of taking it any further becuase I can begin to feel that I run the risk of rounding off the + sign in the front while trying to screw it in. I have tried using both a flat head screw driver which is the full width and also a 1/4" socket as I've seen sugested. I had more luck with the screw driver, after only about half way in I began to have the 1/4" socket rounding off the inside of plug.

My question is has anyone else had this issue? Will it be ok as is? Judging by what I know it's purpose to be I feel like the amount of threads I have in it should be sufficient since there is a place for the gas to escape, it's not going to be under tremendous pressure.

Edit: the other issue is that bracket that wraps around the barrel where the front sight is is loose since the gas plug isn't snug up against it and it jiggles
 
Back the plug out and try to clean out the threads with a wire brush and some barrel cleaning solvent. Im guessing that you have some carbon build up on the threads. Also, hold the old barrel plug up with the new one and try to mesh the threads together. Youll be abel to see if there is any differance in the thread pitches of the two plugs. If they are the same, i think your next bet is to get a proper size thread chase and chase the tyhreads in the end of the gas block.
 
Another method of cleaning the threads in the gas cylinder is to unscrew the gas cylinder lock and screw the lock screw directly into the gas cylinder.
This will clean any fouling out of the threads, and if there's a problem with either the gas cylinder or the Schuster nut it will be apparent.
