Questions about STI Ranger 1911s

A 1911 is on my short list of guns to get so I keep my eyes open when I'm at gun shops for different models and prices so when the time comes to get one I can do so and not spend a bunch of time researching. That being said I ran across a STI Ranger at a shop the other day and realy liked the size, the way it felt and looked. It seemed to me to be real quality piece, but I wanted some other opinions about this company/gun.

So let me have it, tell me what you know, what is good and bad, and maybe some suggestions.

I have one, Took some work to get it to run right, (extraction problems, mostly tension) Great looking, great fit and finish, Tight. Great little gun. My wife fell in love with it, now its her winter carry piece.

Only downside to the original ranger is it needs a 6 shot magazine, the Ranger II uses a 7 shot. But man is that short grip ranger easy to conceal! also a tad slimmer than most 1911's

STI makes great pistols, and they stand behind them, even used ones. I bought a used Trojan 6.0 in .40 S&W, and had an issue with an aftermarket slide stop used by the previous owner and some questions about converting it to 10mm. I spoke with Chris at STI, explained that I was the second owner, and he answered all of my questions. He even suggested a vendor for the proper STI slide stop. He asked me to return the gun to STI if I had any functioning problems.

My 9x19 Trojan 5.0 has also been a joy to shoot.

Great gun, mine is at A.P.W. getting hard chromed, having nightsites and an ambi safety installed. Can't wait to get it back. Magazines are from Metalform and are the New Detonics mags, however any single stack 1911 mag will work, it will just not be flush. If you are going to carry it you might want to swap the mag release spring for a heavier one, mine seems to be a little weak.

I used to have one and it was by far the finest pistol I have ever owned. Granted I have never owned any really fine guns but it was still a very high quality piece. I only sold it because I didn't like the idea of having so much money tied up in one pistol. If you get it try the Wilson Sentinel mags in it. They don't stick out all that far, maybe 3/8" if I remember right. The Sentinel mags are well made but a little pricey. I say if it looks to be in good shape, buy it! Take care, Heath
