In the land of make believe.
I am interested in obtaining a new Walther P99. Specifically the AS model as opposed to the QA model. I am looking at 9mm as opposed to .40 S&W.

So I have a few questions.

  1. Is the AS the DA/SA model?
  2. I have seen that there are 15 round mags and 16 round mags for this gun. What is the difference?
  3. What are the differences between the SW99 and the Walther P99?
  4. Is there anyway to differentiate between the newer models after the recent redesign versus the old one besides the ski-hump in the triggerguard?
  5. Are the older models more desirable? If so why?
  6. I am also interested in obtaining a P99c to compliment the fullsize. Are the holsters interchangeable if I was to get a slide holster?
  7. Are the Walther P99 and P99c with AS triggers still being imported? I have seen a lot of QA models in particular at the local shop and I was wondering about that.
  8. What is a good price for each gun?
  9. And anyplaces online where I could obtain a NIB gun with the AS trigger?

I also want to thank everyone in advance for taking the time out to help me. I came into a bit of cash and want to spend it on something I will enjoy.

As a sidenote I wanted to add "PAGING MR. SHIPWRECK. PAGING MR. SHIPWRECK. Please report to the white courtesy computer and post." ;)

1 Yes the AS is DA/SA.
2 Mags were originally 16 rnd but Walther later changed them to 15.
3 The main difference is that SW use a blackened stainless slide while Walther uses a carbon steel slide. Also, slide contours. All frames are made by Walther in Germany.
4 The triggerguard itself has been changed as well as the slide serrations. Newer model also has a picatinny rail.
5 Some folks prefer the look of the older style 9like me), but I don't think they are more desirable.
6 I don't know about this one.
7 They are still being imported but hard to find right now.
8 New prices range from $525 to $599.
9 I would check Gunsamerica, I beleive I saw some there just recently.

The holster will work fine - though it is a bit longer then necessary - but I could not find a P99c holster, so the full size it is!

Thanks for the information.

I am just looking to get a P99 more so than before. Overall is the P99 more of a compact or a fullsize in your opinions? I am looking for more of a fullsize gun now than another compact.

FWIW:

6. I ordered a FIST Kydex IWB holster and they cut for the compact and molded for the full-size. (Or vice-versa I forget). Both pistols fit perfectly. I don't know about a slide holster from a different manufacturer, but if you custom order I should think you would be able to get what you want.

I'd be the first to admit my FIST Kydex IWB isn't the prettiest little gal at the dance, but she "do the job just fine"...

Best Wishes,

Its hard to find holsters for the P99 and even harder to find them for the p99c. The p99c seems to be happy sitting in p99 holsters for me. be warned though that the older style p99s had a differently shaped trigger guard and you probably want to be sure your holster is made for 2004+ p99's for the best fit.

I would say the P99 is right between the full-size (which i think is more like a Beretta "duty-size" 92) and a compact/sub like the P2000SK/P99C. :)

It is actually the "perfect size", as grip does not suffer (no pinky tuck-under), weight is tolerable (recoil), capacity is good, etc. However, the smaller pistols are always easier to conceal - esp in the part that matters - the grip. On most days, anything that covers my P99c would work fine for my P2000/P99; but in the summer under just t-shirts - the nods goes to the slightly shorter "C".

Tecumseh:

Yes, S&W still imports the P99 AS guns from Walther. S&W has discontinued the AS trigger on their SW99. As mentioned already, Walther made the frame for both. I believe the Walther made slide is carbon/tennifer while the Smith made slide is Stainless/melonite. The Walther 9mm comes with a 15 round mag, while the SW99 9mm comes with a 16 round mag. Either brand mag works with both brands of guns. The easiest way to tell the newest frames is the longer mag releases of the newest frames.

Buds shows to have a 9mm P99 AS in stock http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_55/products_id/32922

There are still some new SW99's with AS triggers out there, and for a bargain. I just picked up a NIB full size SW99 with night sights for $350.00. CDNN also had some for <$400.00.

I own 99 series guns in three calibers (9,40,45) in compacts & full size, all AS triggers. IMHO the SW99 is as good as the Walther P99. There are some Walther snobs that disagree, but to each his own. While the Walthers are more expensive, they do hold their value better.
