OK so I finally bought a M1A 2 weeks ago. Nice rifle, mostly GI parts, first year prouduction with a 00 serial number.

Pic can be found here:

I also ordered 2 CMI contract mags from THR's old friend 44 MAG.com and 400rounds of Surplus German 7.62X51 ammo from Midway as it was on sale.

The mags were perfect GI contract mags. They did fit super tight in my M1A for some reason. They did loosen up a bit after my range outing. I suspect after a few more trips to the range they will loosen up a bit more.

My ammo had the "MEN" head stamp and was housed in sealed green PVC battle packs, boxed in 20 round boxes with the NATO cross. The brass is berdan primed and crimped and was nice, clean and shiney. The projectile was a silverish color. I did not give them the "magnet test".

A total of 100 rounds were fired. No malfunctions were incurred. I used a Shoot and See 4" bulls eye target and all shooting was done off a bench. All shooting was done at B&R Guns/Range in my home town of Havelock NC.

When I bought the rifle the rear sight had about 8 clicks right windage in it and the front site was centered on its dove tail. Of course I re set the rear to center before my range outing. After my first 3 shot group @ 50 yrads it was aparant why there was so much right windage in the site as my group was left by about 6 inches. I cranked the site over and centered my group before moving the target back to 100yrds.

At 100yrds I was able to shoot and entire mag (20rounds) into a 3 1/2" group. The shots were taken at 2-3 second intervals. I used the "target site pic" (6 oclock hold) for all shooting. I did not attemp to shoot any target groups as the 4" bulls eye was starting to strain my eyes after the 20 rounds at 100yrds.

I allowed my G/F to also shoot a mag at 100yrds and she easily kept most of them in the 4" black althou she did have a few fliers 1/2" or so out. Afterwards she remarked "This is one mean ******"

I moved the site to the 300yrd setting and we took turns shooting the steel "rooster" and "pig" gongs the range has at its back stop (250yrs). Both are about 12" or so irregular shaped targets. Using the 6 oclock hold both of us were able to hit it most every shot.

A lot of folks have questions about how good the German MEN and DAG ammo is. I can tell you its darn good stuff and I'm buying as much as I can afford next pay day. Only draw back I see to it is the non reloadable brass because of the berdan primers.

All in all it was a fine day for shooting. Good rifle, good ammo, a good range and a good woman to help/join me.
