I just purchased a new 9mm Taurus Millenium Pro, the PT-111 Pro. I put a lot of thought into the purchase of this new pistol, having recently gotten rid of my primary defense pistol, a Glock 19. I used to have a Taurus PT-92 I was very happy with, so I was open to another Taurus. The original Millenium, the PT-111, felt perfect in my hand, was the right size for concealed carry on my midsize frame and had the features I was looking for. I did not want another gun without a thumb safety. In 9 years as a police officer (former life) the thought had always occurred to me that if I ever got into a situation where a BG managed to grab my gun, having a thumb safety that was engaged might be enough of an obstacle to someone who wasn’t really familiar with pistols that it might buy a few precious seconds of reaction time. At any rate, after looking at quite a few choices, the Taurus seemed perfect.

But some time spent reading this and other forums told me that there had been some problems with some of the older PT-1xx series pistols a few years ago, although all indications were that situation had been resolved. I was a little hesitant and was still trying to decide what to do when I found the new third generation Millenium, the Pro series which was just released (the 9mm is the only one currently available – the others will be available shortly).

The Pro series has fixed the complaints I read about with the older Milleniums. The trigger pull is now shorter, smoother and lighter. It’s DAO, so it’s a longer pull than my Glock, and it’s certainly not a Sig, but it’s a vast improvement over the original PT-111 which I tested. The magazine release has been flush mounted, so the problem that some people reported with hitting the magazine release by accident should not be an issue. The grip has been re-designed, and I found it fits the hand very naturally – this gun fits my hand better than any of the others I’ve tried, and was one of the things that instantly attracted me to this model. The balance is very good, as well.

I took it to the range today (my backyard, since I live on several acres out in the country). I ran through 200 rounds of Win white box 115gr, and a box each of Hydra Shok 135gr JHP and Speer Gold Dot 124gr GDHP, as well as a couple left-over hi-cap Glock mags full of an unrecognized Win JHP. It handled everything I threw at it perfectly and except for the 2 spent cases which bounced off my head, everything exited neatly to the right where it belongs.

I haven’t shot in over a year, but it (or me) still managed to shoot 2-1/2†groups at 15 yards, and 5.25†groups at 25 yards pretty consistently. Certainly not the grouping I used to get with either my Glock or my AR-15, but pretty respectable for a 3.25†barrel and an out-of-practice owner. More than accurate enough for it’s intended purpose as a defensive handgun.

I’m impressed with this gun. If you read this or other forums enough, you can find a reason to avoid buying most every brand in existence. My personal experience with this weapon today has made me a Taurus fan again. I’ll let you know if it does anything to change my mind.

Pakwaan,

How big is your department? Do they allow Taurus as a primary weapon or only off duty? What other guns are approved besides Taurus?

I've been out of law enforcement for almost 10 years now. When I was working, we could carry most brands of 9mm, .38 or .357, as long as you got an "OK" from the armorer. Most guys carried Glocks as their primary duty weapon, but there were a few Sigs and some of the old timers carried S&W revolvers, mostly 686's.

PT111

Thanks for your report.

Has your opinion changed at all since you wrote it?

The PT111 Pro looks great, but I still have some reservations on Taurus...probably read too many build-quality issues on these boards with various models. Your experience has seemed to be pretty positive.

My (older) PT-111 still performs just fine. I have around 800 rounds through it. Since it is my primary CCW, it is not my range gun anymore.

The PT-111 fits my hand better than anything else I tried (with the possible exception of the Walther P-99). It feels "natural" in my hand and I shoot it extremely well for such a short barrel.

It's light enough that it is comfortable to carry and recoil isn't as bad as I had thought it would be.

I have been hesitant to recommend them because of bad reports on some boards but if the newer ones are solid... I might suggest them to a few friends that are starting to consider CCW.

- Thanks for the report!

After the initial problem with my PT111 (broken trigger), the gun has run just fine. I have put a lot of Gold Dot 124gr+P's through it, without one single jam. My pistol would even feed some of my reloads my Glock 17 wouldn't!
I carry this gun, and I trust it.

No, as a matter of fact I like it more the more I get used to it. I now have about 700 rounds through it, and it's performing admirably. It will be my primary carry gun, so I am throwing everything at it that I can - so far, so good.

Someone else mentioned the way this gun feels, and I agree whole-heartedly - it really feels "right" in your hand.

Thanks for the report

PakWann,

Glad the Pro Series is working for you. I have really enjoyed my Millenium, PT 145 pistol and am considering another. Now have about 2,000 rounds through the PT 145 and cannot find another gun that fits me so well with the same features. At 7 yards I can run 10 rounds in five seconds, all COM. Impressive for me. Not so good at 20 but if I am fighting at that range, I am running.

Keep us informed as to how it developes.

Question PakWaan

I used to have a PT-111 and it functioned prerfectly.
Can you tell me why the new PT-111 Pro is heavier than the old
PT 111?

I'd really like to get one, but the increased weight puzzles me.
Thanks

I love My PT 145

I at first had alot of reservations about my PT145, because the frame cracked. But Taurus Fixed it, and I have had no problems with it since I got it back 800+ rnds. The more I carry it and shoot it the more I like it. As I stated at first I had Trust issues with it, but when the fram cracked it did'nt leave me with the inability to defend myself if I had to. Since I realized that and have had no Further Issues the trust issues have waned. Enjoy the Taurus!

weight of pistol

One reason it would probably weigh more is that it has a dual recoil guide rod in it. However, lets face it, the old one weighed 18 ounces and the new one weighs 24 ounces. It is still lighter than most and that added weight probably just makes it more fun to shoot.

PakWaan, which model did you buy? Was yours stainless or blue? If it is stainless and you have access to a digital camera, could you post a picture on the site or email it to me? I have been looking at the 11 Pro for quite some time. The blued one looks sharp but their is only $10 difference in blued and stainless. If the stainless is a matte finish, it might not be too bad. Also, have you found anyone that makes holsters for it? I called Haugen but they said the blanks are not available for it yet.

I thought about trying a regular 111 holster but the new Pro is about 1/8" narrower than the old 111 and do not want the weapon rolling around in the holster.

I got the blue. I've always liked the look/easy upkeep of stainless, but as an ex-LEO it was drilled into my head early that stainless/nickel weapons are a cop's enemy at night - they reflect light too much and make you an easier target when you are trying to use darkness as concealment; so I've always had blued weapons.

I am temporarily using a generic IWB holster for it which fits OK because it was all I could find to fit it, but am going to order a Milt Sparks IWB holster for it.

take a look at Haugen

Haugen holsters are impressive. www.haugenhandgunleather.com

Because of the width difference, the regular 111 will not work for the Pro's, make sure they know there is a difference.

How is the finish wearing on yours?

I have never owned a Taurus. I have owned just about everything else but that is another story. I have heard bad things about the 2nd generation 111's but from what I hear, that has been corrected.

I contacted Taurus and found out about their non-customer service. I asked if they had a picture of the stainless 111 Pro with the night sights, preferably. The lady I talked to said, "No!" and hung up. She acted as if I had asked, "Do you mind if I sacrifice your first born tonight?"

I learned a while back not to listen to the experts too much because generally right after they "test" a firearm, you see in the next issue an ad for that handgun. I have owned two great guns that were total disappointments. I found out that getting the manufacturer to fix the problem was about like asking Bill to tell the truth.:banghead:

You got that right - a real droll bunch down there...
