Range trip with the wife...a few surprises for me.

Couple thoughts....

try some type of "reactive" target. Rotating steel, breaking clay birds, balloons, soup cans. Instant gratification.

As above, high pressure rounds (40 S&W) not only have sharp recoil but sharp blast. I've had pretty good luck with something in a revolver with a smaller grip. My daughter started out with a Colt 3rd Gen in 44-40. She was deadly.

The only reason for the .40 comment is that I personally really like .40 S&W so I have several thus the wife has been slowly trying out each of my firearms to get an understanding of the pro/con of each.

Now that we've worked through that she's pretty much settled on the three she wants to gain some proficiency with.

Have you let her try a 20 gauge? My wife doesn't like any handguns more powerful than a .22, but she's fine with my 20 gauge Remington 1100. And it makes a good pest gun for rural dwellers.

HammerBite - Yes, in fact PAX's technique for operating the slide on a semi-automatic was invaluable.

another okie - She won't touch the shotguns (at least not yet). We'll see what the future holds. Thanks for the suggestion though.

That's Great!

My wife did a similar thing. She said that if I'm going to have all these guns she wants to know how to use them all. I about fell over. I took her to the range with a couple rifles and a couple pistols and let her try them out. She likes the underfolder AK over the SKS and is indifferent about the pistols. She needs to spend a lot more time learning them intimately but in a pinch I think she could figure it out. She knows the pistols are pick up and shoot ready but the rifles/shotguns are rack and rock.

I think this describes Mrs. fiVe. I'm taking the "go slow" approach as she is neutral, but open. I've given her basic instruction on our weapons, and frequently she will (on her own) ask me questions about, or just review, the manual arms for each.
