Reason for .300 Win Mag?

In a bolt action, with hot .30-06 loads available and the .338 Win Mag available if you want heavier bullets, what is the usefulnes of the .300 Win Mag? How much flatter/faster/farthur do you get with it over .30-06? (I found a nice rifle in .300 Win Mag and just started thinking about it.)
