This thread is in response to the thread asking how much ammo one considers a good stockpile. Some people responded saying they stockpiled rather large quantities, thousands of rounds. Others not much at all, hundreds of rounds.
The two main reasons to stockpile this much ammo that I can imagine would be to arm a small militia to defend a compound and/or to keep a large practice supply in case it is taxed prohibitively, along with a couple hundred HD rounds in reserve.
In the shtf case it would seem one should also have at least 5-10 rifles in each 223 and 308, and maybe 5 in 12 gauge along with 10 9's or 45's and a good plan among friends and family to go along with all that ammo. Otherwise it won't matter if you have two 223's with 100k or a million rounds if you are alone and being attacked by a gang of five or ten guys. And gangs, not individual attackers, is something I think we can count on. Either you or they should be dead long before that much ammo runs out. And if this happens multiple times do you think you'll survive every encounter long enough to expend 10k or 50k roundsby yourself? Plus, you aren't gonna want to practice much cause the noise will attract unwanted attention and you don't need thousands of rounds for hunting. If this is a Mad Max type scenario you're gonna need a lot of friends and/or family and a lot of rifles to put all that ammo through. And then you certainly can't have too much because the more compatriots, rifles, and ammo you have the longer you'll survive! So your needs begin to grow exponentially. Maybe one friend or compatriot and one rifle for every 2000 or 5000 rounds? And as someone else mentioned if you need to bail out you had better be able to transport, hide, or destroy all your extra ammo or it will be turned against you.
So is the rising ammo costs and potential for taxes or other prohibitions, shtf scenario, or some other reasons besides simple gratification the reason for your stockpile?
