Rebarreling a Mauser?

Well the 'smith wants 285 total for the whole job. To me it sounds a little steep.

Does that include the price of the barrel? If it includes the barrel, that's pretty good. If not,it is about double what I would expect to have a Mauser barrel installed and headspaced.

I'm pretty sure that's including a decent grade barrel. He kept asking what profile and I told him I wanted one about 24" in length and heavy profile.

I am going to have him do the install, headspace and ream.

With having my Marlin model 80 and my Astra sent off the be blued and this barrel job he wants $595.

blueing out here is about 150-200, depending on the type of firearm and number of parts so thats not that bad.

Thats also a hell of a lot less then i spent on anodizing a single paintball gun, so i might be a little off base on cost LOL.

LOL. Well I'm going to take it out and shoot it, to determine if a counter-bore will be the best method to continue on.

But he said he'd need a reamer to counter-bore it? Would he?

Ok, now I'm seriously questioning what my local smith was quoting for a rebarrel on my Brazilian Mauser! He was telling me that it would cost upwards of $500.00 to have the work done! :what:

He said that he didn't do the work himself and would have to send it to a "Mauser expert". The cost is what turned me off to the project. Now I'm starting to wonder what other things he's BS'd me about. :scrutiny: I hate being a Noob!

If one of you fine gentlemen could PM me the address and phone # of one of your smiths, I would really appreciate it!

I had a 'smith in Selma, Alabama, sell me a brand new Remington 700 take off barrel in 30-06, just last year. $125 to have it re-threaded to fit a Turkish receiver, installed, head spaced and test fired. He has a pile of them in his shop, in just about any standard long or short action caliber you could want. This was dropping it off in person, and picking it back up, no shipping involved.

Hey LJ. Too bad you aren't nearby my garage. We could do it over a weekend or some other day off. I have put together a 30-06 , a .308, and two 6.5 swede from my mausers. Buying/renting the gear (using a short chambered barred) is an unrecoverable expense but from the prices I am seeing, go for it. No reason to pay that much.

Yeah LJ, somebody sent me a message about gun work. Most of the barrels I have found require lathe work. I do not have lathe(s) to get stuff done and used short chambered barrels. I have not seen many lately while looking on the net.

I spent 630 having my K98 rebar rebarreled from 8mm to 308. I had receiver tried bolt lapped bolt handle cut and one of there's installed. I went with a fluted heave SS 24" barrel.
