My 870 with 20" IC barrel and rifle sights shoots standard Winchester 1 oz slugs very accurately. Silouettes are no problem at 100 yds. Buckshot is also hitting where it's supposed to. But...

I tried Some Remington "Managed recoil" slugs...shot wayyyyy too high. At least 8" too high at 50 yds!

Whats' up with that?

Anyone have better luck than me with reduced-recoil slugs?

Thanks,
TCW :)

Simple explanation: the RR slugs are moving rather more slowly than the full-patch loads. This means that they spend longer in the barrel than the hot stuff, and the barrel has just a smidgen more time to rise under recoil before they leave the muzzle. Hence - higher strikes on target.

The fix is to either reduce the elevation on your sights, or use "Kentucky elevation" ( :D ) to solve the problem.

My ghost ring is ALL the way down on my "tactical" 870 because that load is all it shoots ! It is right on at 75 yards and 3" high at 50 yards and an inch high at 25 yards. I can live with that as it is 3" low at 100 METERS. I like the great accuracy it gives and can shuck those things on target like an M-3 grease gun! :D
