I was surfing pawn shops today and ran across a Remington 5mm mag rifle. It had a laminated stock (i think) and took a single stack(maybe 7-8 rounds) magazine...looked kinda like a .22 mag.

Anyone have any info on the 5mm? Is ammo still made in that cal?

The rifle you are looking at is a model 591 (the 592 is same caliber, but tube magazine).

Decent price would be in the $150 range in good condition but, like John said, ammo is scarce and expensive.

There is a centerfire conversion available, but I don't remember the source off hand.

Still, if you buy it, do so as part of a collection, not a plinker.

If you don't, PM me with the shop's phone #. I have been on the prowl for a 591 in good to excellent condition.

It can be converted to 5mm Craig centerfire, but probably not worth the bother if you haven't bought it already (unless it comes with several boxes of ammo). A couple of boxes are probably worth more than the gun itself.

this is no longer made, it is collector item only, at this point. it was the best of all the rimfire rounds ever, but remmy were a@#$#ses about it, and kept the round in house. big mistake. the round and the rifle never took off. but it is a damn fine round, like a 17hmr on steroids. rthe few times i see rounds for it, and that is very few, are about 50 bucks a box. it is not made any more.
