i just shot rifled slugs in my Rem 870 express * smoothbore) with Mod choke. at 25yards from a rest i get consistently :

6inches right and 4 inches low

using Fedral and Rem brands.

is it possible the mod choke is throwing it off? i dont have a Cyl, IC choke to test with yet.

thanks for the help.

Are you using a regular barrel with just a front bead for a sight? If so you will just have to learn how to hold it to get the slugs to hit where you want. The bead is not designed for shooting slugs. Sometimes they are pretty close, sometimes not.

Changing to a different choke may change the point of impact, maybe not. Worth a try if you have one. Most slugs shoot better through a more open choke, but modified should work OK

I don't think I've tested slugs through my 18.5" barrel yet, but on my 26" VR w/ Mod choke installed, the slugs were consistently ~3" right and ~5" low, as I recall. The upside to this is that consistency means you can figure out a "holdover" to get an accurate POI.

I assume rifle-sighted barrels are actually regulated/tested somehow to ensure POA matches POI - anyone know?

jmr40:

im using a regular 28inch barrel. with front bead sight.

i shot from a steady rest, gun was level. i did try to compensate for the 6inches right and 4 low and it worked well. i had 2 of 3 shots touching and 1 was about 1 1/2 from the other 2.

im going to try more open chokes and see what happens. my goal is to reduce the 6inch right and 4inch low to something easier to adjust for.

i shoot a fixed sight single six so im used to adjusting for impact.

thanks

This is merely my experience, and may not be your issue, but something to look into:

When I first started shooting slugs thru my 870 TALO with a front bead it drove me crazy. I was all over the map at 50 yards, and at 100 I couldn't even get onto a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. My problem? Basics, as in most shooting troubles. I got an experienced shotgunner to watch/coach me and in no time at all I could keep Federal TruBalls in a 6" circle at 50 yards with the bead. I can cut that in half with my 870 tactical with ghost ring sights.

Have someone take a look at your stance, grip, consistency of cheek weld, trigger pull, possible flinching, and how you're bracing for recoil (I use the old push-pull). I'd look at these things with a teacher before spending money on equipment.

Snakum, a friend of mine at the local gun club is going to shoot mine tomorrow night. he has the same 870 as me and has been shooting alot longer than i have. ( ive been shooting 2 years and hes been shooting at least 40).
