I used some Remington .223 55 grain FMJ to sight in a new Savage 110 Predator and the groups seemed quite erratic at best. I tried some reloaded .223 with Hornady 50 grain BT that all went in 1 hole so it must be an ammo issue. Anyone else with groups from the Remington and how does it compare with the other cheaper .223 bulk accuracy wise from Federal, PMC, Wolf etc. ? Thanks for any replies!

Bill, you'll find that your rifle will like what it likes. Even if I had the same make and model that came off the assembly line just before yours the two rifles may not like the same ammo or bullet. There are a few well known "Match" grade ammuntion makers out there that can build ammo that works consistantly with many rifles. Federal Gold Metal Match and Black Hills produce some good 223 ammo. But unlike Joed above my AR-15 really like Federal bulk ammo and will shoot 5 shots into 3/4" groups consistantly. That's really good for bulk ammo. There are too many variables going on to pigion hole a brand of ammo and say it won't shoot.

Actually, pretty good from a couple of diff rifles- very diff, a cz 527 noted
for exceptional accuracy, and a Saiga, noted for acceptional accuracy--- for an AK. both shot it into moa or smaller groups.

I would say my groups ran around 3 MOA and frankly I was expecting better. The Savage has 1 in 9 twist rate and from what I have read should shoot 55 grain and heavier bullets better than the lighter bullets. The reloads I shot were 50 grain Hornady BT loaded with Benchmark and they all went into one hole less than 1/2 in. Apparently some 1 in 9 twist barrels will group with the 50 grain bullets. Going to try some different .223 bulk after giving the rifle a good cleaning. I have quite a bit of the Federal .223 55 grain FMJ on hand so I guess that will be the next thing I try.

2 to 4 inches is the norm for most FMJs, no matter who makes them. Go to the Box O Truth and see how poorly some FMJs shoot out of a precision gun.
I took your advice and went to the Box O Truth and checked out the article & groups. I don't quite feel so bad now about the way the Remington FMJ shot!

It'll be on par with the rest of the el' cheapo ammo made....not known for its record breaking accuracy it is a good blasting ammo when, and only when, one can locate a lot of it that is fairly inexpensive.
If you want a tight little group out of factory loaded 223, think Hornady, Federal Gold Medal Match, Federal Premium or some of the Winchester stuff, it gets favorable comments from our customers also.
Bottom line, accuracy costs coin....no way around it, either coin for factory stuff or TLC at the loading bench! lol hehehehe

The Remington 55gr .223 FMJ was the worst of 3 brands I tried in my Mini-14, with PMC bronze being the best.
