I recently purchased a used 552 BDL that I am very happy with.
I would like to know when it was manufactured.
I did a web search and found http://remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes
But the serial number on my 552 is not on the barrel it is on the receiver.
And my serial number does not have (2) or (3) letters before the numbers.
I tried to apply the secret code and I can not determine my rifles build date.

The serial number is A1974106.

Is it as simple as year/month/day - which would mean 1974 October 6th?

I hope someone can help.

Thanks

The barrel code is stamped on the left side of the barrel just forward
of the receiver. It will be 2 or 3 letters. You can use this chart to
find the date code/year of manufacture.Remington Dates of Manufacture

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.
