Hey gunners, I am inheriting a Remington 721 30-06 and would like to buy some ammo for it. Do any of yall have better luck with certain brands or loads in your 721? Thanks!

Welcome to THR, okiesheepdog.

As with any rifle, it's a buy and try situation to find something that shoots well. The cheapest ammo that works well in many rifles is Prvi-Partizan and Wolf Gold brands. For hunting, I recommend the 165gr for all around deer and large game.
The 721 is usually not a beauty queen, but they are the precursor to the M700, and are reliable and usually very accurate.

Here's a big list of available ammo for the '06 at MidwayUSA.

thanks

Thanks! Yeah I am aware of that diff guns like diff ammo. Just wanted to try and narrow it down so I wouldn't end up breaking the bank on ammo.

I love my 721 in 30-06. It was my grandfathers and now its mine. I have shot all sorts from it with adequate results. Winchester's Grey box in 150 gr and 165 gr. was my go to for a while.

Currently I am loading my own with very good results, if that is up your alley I can give you my current load, though I am tinkerig still. Gor years I just used the Winchester grey box, though my grandfather liked Hornady's silvertips in 180 gr and 165 gr. (I have a bunch of boxes left though they are from the 70s. I'm not sure if those are still around).

The 721 is a work horse and doesn't need to be babied, though watch the extractor from what I hear if it breaks you have to find a work around with a Sako extractor that has been machined to fit. Otherwise enjoy it. I really do love that rifle.

I'm in the same boat you are IdahoSkies. My dad sold his .243 and I gave back his 30-30 he had loaned to me. So I was down home back in April and bought a nagant. I was showing it to Gpa and he did the normal "why did you buy that?" One of my excuses was is that I didn't have a deer rifle. And he told me he had an old 30-06 he would "loan it to me till he past away then it would be mine" I was freaken out on the inside but tried not to show it. I instantly asked him what it was. When he told me it was a Remington I knew it was going to be awesome. I am going to pick it up when I go down next weekend! i will post pics when I get it.

My first deer rifle was a 721 .30-06 that I bought with a 4x Unertl scope on it for $50 back in 1970. I still have that rifle. It has been the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. It has consistently shot sub moa with different bullets from 130gr to 180gr. I hope yours shoots as well. As for hunting ammo, I would recommend Winchester Power Point or Remington Core-Lokt in 165gr weight. Those two bullets have probably taken more deer than all other bullets combined. Nothing wrong with either of them.

My 721 was also my grandfathers. I inherited it last year. This summer I updated the scope/rings. Mine does quite well with 150g bullets. I favor the Federal powershok, accurate enough and cheap enough to practice with.
