If one was looking for a Remington pump for a woods rifle, do you think it is worth searching out a used 760, or do you consider the 7600 to be as good or better than it's predecessor?
I'm not real familar with the 7600, but it's been my experience that when a manufacturer comes out with a new model, seldom is it a better gun then the one it is meant to replace. But I'm sure there are cases where it does happen....

Hi Uncle Alvah I got a Rem 760 .30-06 from a pawn shop ,outside of barrel a little pitted but bore clean.I found 10 rd mags on ebay that work great.I called Rem and they said my rifle was made in 1952 it shoots any old / new ammo everytime and right on target.Paid $225 didn't bother to deal after bore lighting it and it has a lyman peep sight.Haven't shot the new 7600.New 7600 in .30-06 is $386.87 .

I have a 7600 in .30-06 with a 3x9 Leupold scope. I preferred it because I use mainly pump shotguns and it felt natural. The big difference I see is that many old 760s had nice wood stocks and deep blueing on the metal. Mine has a matte black finish and a black synthetic stock. The trigger is a little heavy to me, more like a shotgun. But it will group factory 150 gr. rounds into around an inch at 100 yds over sandbags. I have fired it at 3 deer. None took another step. I have shot maybe 200 rounds through it practicing at the range. (I reload) It has not jammed once.

I had a 760 in .308 for a while. It was reliable, handy and pretty accurate but it felt like I was holding a 2X4. Most probably a personal preferance thing. The trigger was not great but certainly managable.

If they fit you, I don't think you are choosing between any real functionallity between the 760 and the 7600, only looks. I will say that I much prefer the shorter action of the .308 over the 30-06 though.

I believe the barrel of 760 was not free-floating while the barrel of 7600 is - which should make it a bit more accurate. Also the bolt lugs of 760 were slightly different

I own two 760 rifles in .30-06. One I purchased, the other was given to me upon my Father-In-Law's death. Both will hold slightly under MOA with handloads. These rifles shoot!

If they feel good, buy it. From my experience, you will not be disappointed.

I made an inquiry as to the differences via the Remington website a couple days ago. The response is kinda short on the details, but is copied below:

Thank you for your inquiry. Some differences are the way the barrel attaches to
the action, the bolt lugs, bolt assembly, the action bar assembly. Basically
most parts do not interchange between them except for the butt stock and
magazines.
