Remington Custom Shop Rifles - Good or Bad???

I've shot one but didn't own it. It was nice but I feel you could have a better rifle built for less money. Remington's custom shop guns have gotten rediculous in price. The last few years they've gone up hundreds of dollars each year. I know the 40-x's are now well over $2000. This is in the realm of full blown custom competition guns.
The KS I shot shot well though. Handloads around 1/2". Problem is you can get accuracy like that from a lot of guns these days.

Remingtons Custom Shop(RCS) rifles are for the most part good.
BUT...a lot of the rifles coming out of the RCS has had VERY little done to them but cost a LOT.
For what your going to spend with RCS, you could get a full on custom from a personalized custom builder and I guarantee you it will shoot better than the RCS unit!
That KS Mountain is a fine rifle but costs way, way, way more than its worth...you could get a rifle that shoots better, have the barrel done, purchase a Kevlar stock, have it dipped or sprayed any color or scheme you like and still have less money tied up!

your best bet is to buy a gun of choice and take it to a coustom smith and tell him/her what you want.
I have in my closet a rifle to do just that. a remington 700 30/06 purchaced new for 450, it has a very good action. going through midway, i have purchaced the stock and barrel for less than 1000. the smith i will be using has quoted me 400 to barrel the action and all the rest I will do myself. (bedding, and fitting metal to wood).

I love the looks of the model Seven MS rifles, but the price is just comical. It's a $700 rifle with a $300 stock and a set of iron sights added, and they want over $2K.
A Model 7 is worth $700...more like $400...I mean worth, not cost. And those stocks....$300....not! Maybe $200 in Clinton's economy!

MSRP on a 700 Mountain LSS, long action, is $1,052. Don't think I'd pay factory custom shop prices. 13.5" LOP for one thing.

I looked at a Model 7 with a full stock (custom shop gun) at a local gun shop. Their price, $2600.

I like the way the Model 7 handles, but the current price on the regular models is ridiculous, and you have to add $75 for an aftermarket safety to even have a real hunting rifle with the standard features that come with a Stevens 200
Given that I wouldn't consider paying the current price for a CDL, whatever the price is for the Custom Shop gun is out of the question.

I've got some Remmy's with Timney and Jewell triggers. What do you mean by "standard features of a Stevens"? Are you referring to an aftermarket trigger that will lock the bolt on safety?

Yea...I don't know what Big Green is doing, we have cut our Remington stock back quite a bit because of slow sales with that brand.
I guess that they(Remington)need the extra cash to but up all these manufacturers like they have been doing....right!
I hope Cerberus comes to their senses before they drive Remington to the brink of extinction.
Corporate GREED!! They are doing the same as Browning did, raise the prices while lowering the quality and demanding premium price for the same...all the while riding on the 'old' name!
It'll catch up with them...if they don't change their outlook!

Shop#1 sees a lot of Marlins and Stevens sold as far as bolt gun go with Winchester coming up fast!
Shop#2 Sees the majority of bolt rifle sales go to Savage, and this would include a lot, not all, but quite a few semi-custom builds. And again, Winchester a extremely close second.
The clientele at Shop#2 is quite different than the other shop...and don't ask the locations, we are forbidden to discuss anything concerning advertising or location, contact ect....
It isn't rocket science...Savage offers a rifle that most, if not all the time will be MOA right out of the box and at an attractive price that lets the retail seller generate profit....a feat that has become impossible with Remington!
Winchester is on their way to sharing the podium with Savage...and from what I have seen, the Winchesters are superb rifles...only problem is the price point could be better...Winchester does need to lower their price just a tad, to let the retailer make a dime on the sale, instead of a nickle! hehehe
Winchester is bringing out the Feather weight and Sporter in additional calibers...in the near distant future!
I don't think Savage will falter, unless they go stupid like Big Green has, but they need to keep an eye on Winchester(FNH).
Also, the Weatherby Sub-MOA Vanguard is selling well at both locations.
