I have been reading in the forums lately that Remington's quality has relaxed a bit. Looking at a Remington Model 700 CDL compared to the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight and various offerings from Savage and Howa, how does the Remington stack up in terms of quality?

You'll hear a lot of complaints about Remington from some people. I like the Winchester 70 better, but have never ran into any of the supposed problems with Remington. I think they make a good rifle for the money and they tend to be one of the more accurate rifles made.

I currently own more Remington weapons, by far, than any other brand. And I can tell you from personal experience .... There is a reason for all the talk on the net and in gun shops about the decline in quality and customer service with Remington since they almost went under and were purchased by Cerberus Capital. Yesterday around 1:00PM I was in a new shop here in the small town near where I live and a Remington Quality rant cranked up. That makes THREE different shops I have personally heard a DEALER OF REMINGTON PRODUCTS slam their recent decline in QA. And that's not counting dealers I talk to online (like Uncle Mike here at THR).

But it's your money. Do what ya want. You might get lucky.

I can't say anything to their rifles, but I did get burned buying a new 870 based on their reputation alone.

Snakum, the way I see it is that is a ton of people are talking about the decline in quality there must be a reason. I hear nothing but GOOD things about Savage and Howa/Weatherby. I like the look of the Rem CDL but then I saw the Weatherby Vanguard Sporter, just as nice. First and foremost I am a sucker for a laminate stock but I like the standard wood too. For the quality issues and price I think I will stay away from new Model 700s.

I've also had issues with a 870. Not at all like their reputation. I don't think the quality is there any longer. Their old guns seem to be great though.

I own 2 Remington 700's. Had a third but sold it as I just had to many guns. I've not had any problems with mine. The older wooden stock rifles needed bedding work to shoot well. The one I sold off was a 700 VS in .22-250 that shot extremely well.

A friend just bought a new 700 SPS 3 weeks ago. In my opinion I wouldn't buy another Remington. The SPS does not come with a free floated barrel. Groups weren't all that good until he ground off the 2 tabs touching the barrel and did some bedding work. In my opinion this is unacceptable for a brand new gun. As long as Remington has been in business they know nothing about free floating a barrel.

I've owned 2 Winchester 70's. The first with wooden stock needed bedding work. The second, one of the last Stealths to come from the old plant is a real nice and accurate rifle.

Have owned 2 Savages. Out of the box they were extremely accurate guns. If I were looking for a new rifle it would probably be a Savage.

It boils down to the fact the Remington was once THE firearms manufacturer! When Savage and later, Winchester took the proverbial dive into the netherworld of shoddily produced product, the world shuddered.
What are we to do now, they(Remington) was the only manufacturer that was producing decent enough sporting firearms for the time! Oh my!

Like all companies, Remington has hit a low spot in the quality of product they produce currently, does this mean that the company known as Remington Arms is poo poo, not at all, what it does mean, is that right now, they are not offering the quality that we all have grown to expect from them. This may or may not be from their new owners directives concerning the way the company is doing business, employee moral, material quality and so on.....

Folks on this and other forums are quick to pin the hate hat on anybody that does not sing praises to their beloved company, be that company good, or bad, be it an automobile manufacturer, a coffee maker manufacturer or a firearm manufacturer, whatever! I can go on the record as saying that, I love Remington, and wish they would return to producing product like they did in days gone bye, but sadly, I don't expect this from Cerberus.

Remington does indeed have their problems right now, but is this seen from younger folks whom have grown up with the current quality of products in the world today, or is it just noticed from the folks that have grown up with Remington, own many firearms produced by them from days of old that exhibit awesome quality and accuracy, these are the people yelling the loudest concerning Remingtons downfall, we/they know what Remington is capable of, and we do not like what we see now.

Is this totally the employees fault, management...? or has the corporate giant Cerberus dictated the end result?

Once Savage and Winchester firearms were not worth crossing the street to get one for free, now, well now, Savage is building one of the very finest mass produced rifle lines in the market today, and FNH/Winchester is well on their way to this level of quality also, some would say they are already there!

Remingtons have their problems, from manufacturing and material shortfalls to less than enthusiastic customer service to upper management that will tell you they don't give a fat rats azz what the public thinks of them...we are what we are, and that, my friend, is that!

Remingtons are not ALL bad, we still sell them regularly, returns are steep but none the less, they are still going out the door, even if the price is waaaaay too high for the various rifle models along with some of the shotguns! As for me, I can't comfortably buy a Remington with the price they ask for one, knowing the quality and how some of their employees have been treated.

The ONLY way to get their attention is to simply buy a product from one of their competitors and then let them know, (politely), WHY you bought from their competitor. We have seen what cutting quality does to a product and their reputation in the auto industry as well - it takes a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to recover from things like that

Agreed 100%, I feel the same way. Remington was a American icon, but if they continue to falter WRT quality control and overall value I don't know how long they can live off the name. I'd not buy a new one, but wouldn't hesitate to purchase one that is about a decade old (prior to the slip in quality).

Hate to say it, and hope I'm wrong, but I don't believe that they care...but if they keep it up, they will before long.

:)

Same here.

I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to marlin. Doesn't look good though. :(

I started buying Remington products in the 70s. Used to be one of my go to company's to buy a rifle or a shotgun. Not any more. It became obvious to me from some of the rifles and problems I got from around 1993 thru 2005 that more than a few people at big green don't care.

I have 3 products, 870 which had problem at the first shot I made, Remington repaired it, then 597 which spits bullets and jams ammo so I just stopped using it, I bought those 3 years ago, well I got 700 sps month ago, no complains so far, but I will replace its stock with aluminum bedding block like HS or B&C, just don't like the idea of not free floated barrel. I did free floating on the original stock, it's not bad for paper punching, most of the groups are below 1/2 MOA, o yeah I had to adjust the trigger on it to lighter pull, probably will replace it down the road to a jewell...
