I've come into a neglected Mossberg 20ga pump shotgun and was hoping to figure out what I need to bring it up to date.

It is a 500C with wood furniture and was sold, not to me, as a Youth Model. It is missing the thumb safety and has a light dusting of rust on the barrel.

Just doing a little looking around on the internet and I see a lot of Mossberg 500s, but no 500C. The closest thing I thought it might be was a 500 Combo...of course, mine only came with one barrel.

Would a 20ga 500, take the same furniture as other 500s or were the 20ga guns built on a smaller receiver?

Most importantly, would the thumb safety for a 12ga 500, fit on a 20ga?

Thanks for sharing your experiences and for any suggestion for sites to purchase or learn more about what I have.

For anyone interested, I'm thinking about outfitting this to use in multi-gun competitions where I'm also shooting a rimfire carbine and pistol///mind as well go small, all-around

The "C" just designates it as a 20ga (A=12ga, B=16ga, C=20ga, D-not used, E=.410). The safety is the same between all gauges, but the stock and forearm are gauge specific.

Mossberg customer service has been very handy when I've called them in the past. Also numrich online has been good for gun parts.

Swap out safeties

I like Mossberg 590 metal safeties on my 500. Its about a $15 swap that makes all the difference. I would also suggest you get a factory 18.5" smooth bore/ security barrel for $60 direct from Mossberg. My 500C is one of those guns that my friends razz me about not being a 12 ga. Funny thing is when they shoot it they end up getting themselves a 500C.
Here is a great source for parts & stocks:

Good luck

The D was used, but it was used on 410 bolt action shotguns. The safety is the same and not hard to get. On my 500's, all from the early days of manufacture, the safety is steel so I don't worry. But replacing the safety isn't so hard.

I went to their website and couldn't find any barrels listed.

Would this be a situation where you'd have to call to order or is there a link that I'm not aware of?

You can buy barrels and stocks directly from Mossberg. Contact their service department at (800) 363-3555.

You can also buy any part for your shotgun from MidwayUSA.

Thanks.

Now that I'm over the shock of tax time, I'll start seeing which way I want to go with this

In the past I have used Havlin Sales, TJ General Store, and Corson's Barrels for my Mossberg barrels and parts.

Realize that, depending on how much needs replacing, you might be better cost-wise, just getting a new one; but if it is just for the project fun aspect of it, have fun..........
