I'm curious about how to improve ignition on my ROA. No real problems, but I'd like to be even more sure. I've heard that Treso/Ampco nipples are recommended. Which part numbers, especially through Dixie and Possible Shop would be the best? If I were to get these nipples, would they take the same wrench, and if not what wrench would I have to buy?

Also, I've seen pics of these neat little plastic cap guards/cap protectors that look like tiny pink washers that go over caps. Supposedly these things keep the caps from falling off and help keep powder dry if I happen to be out in the woods with it on a damp day. Where can I get these things in like 100 packs? I'd love to try them out...

Thanks!

Crazy, I do quite well with stock nipples but there are those that swear by Treso. As for the cap guards I make my own. Just cut about a 3/16" length of 3/16" diameter plastic hose available in aquarium supply stores or look on-line. A 12" length of hose will give you plenty of cap guards and they are reusable but kinda hard to remove after use.

That's a cool idea, Joe! I would never have thought of the plastic hose...

Still curious for info from those who have used Treso, though.

I use Tresos on my ROA and am very happy with them. They are more consistent in size than the Ruger set that came with the gun, which for me means no more lost caps. The hex-shape Ruger nipple wrench won't work on them, though. You will need a regular pistol-size wrench.

Check The Possible Shop for a set of Treso nipples. Part number is 11-50-126. The cost is pretty steep though at $31.95 for a set of six.

Swapping out to Treso bronze or stainless nipples is a good idea. I'm also curious as to whether you're using real Black Powder or a substitute?

There are Ruger nipples and then there are Ruger nipples...

The factory original Ruger nipples on my first pair of ROAs never gave me any problems. The factory original Ruger nipples on my second pair of ROAs gave me about 20% failures to fire. Same powder, same caps on all guns. I don't know why, but the failures to fire went away when I put Treso nipples on the second pair.

I use Remington #10 caps on both original Ruger nipples and the Treso nipples, so it was the nipples, not the caps.

You did not specify in your original post just what is happening that needs "improvement"... If caps are falling off, then try a smaller cap. If the caps are firing but the powder is not, change nipples. I guess the cap guards will secure the caps OK, but they should not be necessary if you have the right nipple/cap combination.

I would like to add a small tip...bout out on damp/rainy days with the ROA.
In another discussion bout caps...someone pointed out the cheap "ring mount cap gun caps"...and how tightly they fit on the nipples.....some tried this....some said it worked great..some said it was a waste of time.......well...I got curious...cuz caps sure are not getting cheaper.......and the "ring-caps" sure can be found cheap.....so I tried them out....and they worked better than expected......truely did fit nice and snug on the nipple...streatching a bit when applied...seemed somewhat moisture proof....now...I dabble with flints from time to time...and have a tiny flask just for priming pans on flinters..dispenses a very small amount of 4f...soooo...when I am going shooting for serious...I have "primed" each nipple with 4f...pressure fit the plastic "ring-cap"...and have had 100% ignition......each and EVERY time........inspite of the weather....

Thanks for the tip on the "do it yourself" cap guard - I didn't know the right size hose to buy before reading your post. The price is definitely right! :)
