Has anyone used a rubber mat as part of a target backstop to prevent sand leaking out, etc? I thought I heard of them being used this way and was wondering what thickness mat to use.
When we first got plate racks at our club old conveyor belts were cut up and hung as "splatter shields". They got tore up pretty fast and were never replaced. Eventually angled steel plates were installed to keep the splatter from going up and above the backstops.
Berms/backstops need on-going maintenance. Often this is an opportunity to harvest lead and copper for recycling.
Because targets tend to get hung in the same place each time and that spot gets drilled pretty harshly I would suggest that there would soon be a fist size hole that leaks out sand pretty darn badly. Likely in as little as one day on a public or well used club range.
