Does anyone have any feedback or advice on the Ruger American .308 or .270? Thinking about purchasing...

Thanks!
Renee :p

A friend of mine has one in 308 that I Plan on putting some rounds through this weekend and going head to head against my Rem 700 also in 308. I'll report back and let you know what I think.

I was going to buy one but found that the stock is uncomfortably narrow for me and my big paws. It isn't a large rifle by any means. However, the trigger was pretty good. I see very good reviews as to the accuracy of them. If you can, try to handle one before you plop down the dough. If it fits you, go for it.

my father and I both purchased .308's. very accurate and smooth rifles. Also light, the recoil will let you know it is there. My dad liked his so much he just ordered the new .22-250.

Very light rifle. As mentioned, good trigger and a smooth bolt. I adjusted the trigger to almost the lightest possible and I like it better there. Buttpad is very squishy.

It uses mounting blocks molded in to the stock which the action screws in to. It's a nice solid system but could make aftermarket stocks a problem. The fore end is way too lightly built and it flexes with even slight pressure.

I trimmed a fair amount of material from stock to widen and deepen the barrel channel, and that cut my groups in half right away.

Bipod use is not an option unless you stiffen that fore end or add a new stud much further back.

I think the barrel is a little rough, after even just 10 shots I was getting more copper fouling than I thought it should. It took about 150 rounds and some Flitz before it got better.

The magazine does feel a little weak, but it works great. Replacement mags are like 40 bucks though.

Mine likes the bullets seated 0.010 off the lands and doesn't like factory ammo all that much.

You can't beat the price no matter what. Around here they run $345.00. No regrets at all overall.

I just picked one up a few weeks ago, I haven't got out to shoot it yet but initial impression is good. Nice trigger, smooth bolt. Looking forward to putting a few rnds through it. I have heard quite a few good things from others about this rifle as well.

I bought mine (in .308) in November. As a hunting rifle its great; light, manuverable, and first shot accurate. As I was working up loads I discovered every shot is higher and to the left of POA. Not a bench rifle at all but not as pricey as one either.

In plan on grabbing the next .243 Ruger American that I can lay my hands on---unless they're outlawed in New York by then. Looks like the new Remington 783 might give the American a run for its money, but it's not available in that caliber. I sure would like to see them side by side to judge their heft and fit.

I've been trying to convince myself to buy one in .270, but I just couldn't get past the stock. It just seemed flimsy when compared to something like a Thompson Center Venture or Savage. These two rifles will run about 100-150 more than the Ruger, but you'd probably spend that much trying to find a better stock (if you COULD find one).

All of that said, the ones I've held have gone naturally to my shoulder, had a very nice bolt, and a crisp, just-right trigger. I could take or leave the mat-black finish, but for the price, it'd be a welcome addition to most households.
