Ruger MarkII question

I have the MarkII with the 5.5 bull barrel. I bought a cordura type flap holster to carry it in, but the sharp point on the rear of the front site catches inside the holster when you draw the gun.
Has anyone modified the front site to remedy the problem?
If so, how much of the site did / can you remove?
Or would it even affect the site to remove the rear altogether making it round rather than have the point?

I dunno that I'd want to modify the sight. Maybe you could glue or otherwise affix a thin strip of slick plastic along the front of the holster that would allow the sight to slide along as you draw the pistol. Does that make sense?

That sharp edge is what gives you a really sharp and crisp sight image, I would modify the holster before modifying the sight.

Aftermarket sight

There is an aftermarket sight that is designed to fit on the MK II. Just unscrew the screw holding down the front sight and replace with the new sight. It looks just like the old sight except it does not have the sharp "hook" on hte edge. Check Brownells or Midway catalogs.

I have a MKII and I know what you are talking about. That is one sharp nasty edge if you are trying to carry it in a holster. I gave up on carrying it in a holster and now have a few other .22lr pistols to pack so it is not a big deal for me anymore. There are aftermarket sights to correct your problem or you could either buy a holster than has a sight rib built in to protect your front sight blade or re-shape the front sight. I wouldn't mess with reshaping the front sight either because it works so well for what it is meant to do and that is target shooting. If you want a holster friendly .22lr, maybe you should look at the fixed sight Ruger MKII, it has a post front sight that doesn't have that hook on it.

If you decide to re-shape the front sight, you can take off as much as you like as long as you don't touch the top or the side and your won't affect the POI. You could grind the face of the sight flat so there is no hook at all and it won't really change your sight picture much. It may be a little less sharp in daylight due to light hitting the corners of the front sight but unless you are doing serious target work, it should hurt your accuracy enough that you wil be able to tell.

I say, if that is what you want to do, you should do it. The worst thing that can happen is, you ruin the front sight. You can buy new ones for not a lot of money from Ruger so you won't be out all that much.
