OK need some advice from anyone that has attended any of Fred’s Appleseed shoots.
I’m very interested in going to the one in Idaho (June 9 and 10 2007) but am unsure if my present rifles are up to the task.

While I am considering getting a CMP M1 before the shoot, should the family coffers prohibit me from doing so, all I have to bring is an SKS or my Mosin 91/30.

Now Fred’s information says any rifle will do, but is that true?
How well will a “small” caliber like the x39 do there, or how well will the old bolt action x54R perform?

As usual, thanks in advance for any information.

Well...RTFM! Go to the RWVA Forum (www.RWVA.org click on forum, and drill down the Applessed threads) and you'll have more than enough information to process.

As a "short" answer, your SKS is oft represented on the line, as are the Mosin's. Simply learn, before you come, to use the stripper clips for loading!

While for a "Battle Rifle" we (RWVA) speak highly on the Garand/M14 (.30 cal holes) we do encourage you to bring what you got.

Now, 90+% of the Plan of Instruction is done with a Course of Fire at 25 meters (like 26 yards minus), so the 7.62x 39 round will do fine. We use stock rifles and ammo to show you what you can do, and to maximize the most important part of the equation....you the shooter & trigger time.

IF the range permits some "full distance" shooting, out to 300 yards or more, there may be an opportunity to fire that distance with your BATTLE SIGHT ZERO, to help YOU recognize or find that relationship. It is here, if at all, that the "close quarters" round (I'll resist the "a" word) may peter out....in knock down power.

Please...pick up a copy of Fred's guide (Hint...on the RWVA page if you click "Rifleman Toolbox" or something of the sort..you'll get the essentials for free) and PRACTICE your positions and trigger control (dry fire) for a few weeks before you come.

Old, I mean mature, bones and joints don't stretch like they do before we (all of us) discovered gravity! And every minute you spend on perfect practice will pay dividends in your own performance!

Also. make sure WHATEVER rifle you opt for, has been degreased, cleanded, and lubricated appropriately. Even without having been to an Appleseed, with the toolkit above, you can get a 'rough' zero on the stick shooting at most pistol ranges...at 25 yards, so the 'gross work' will be done and we can help you refine that zero at the clinic.

What target should I use to zero?

A 1" square is all you need. Work on getting your groups centered on the 1" square and you'll be way ahead of the pack come Idaho!

Looking forward to you're arrival

Pacer got it !

Nothing wrong with your SKS at an Appleseed........it's about teaching YOU not your gun. Stripper clips as mentioned will ease the process, about 10-15% of the shooting is rapid fire and the strippers really help. All the rest can easily be shot with your Mosin (though they make strippers for that too).

If you want to make a cheap change that will help make the SKS all that it can be put a $50 tech-sight on it to make elevation and windage adjustments much easier (again not at all a requirement). http://www.tech-sights.com/

I like the SKS a lot for the Appleseed Shoots because the ammo is just about as cheap as you can shoot without going down to a 22 rimfire (and those are OK for Appleseed's too, it's about the shooter and NOT the rifle !).

Good Luck !

Thanks for the quick - detailed reply Pacer and mkh100.

I think I thought that the shooting was performed at 300 M area, but with the predominant amount of instruction in the 25 M area... no problems at all! That's my typical lane choice here at the gun club.

And now you've given me a reason to get the Tech Sight I wanted last year.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: Have you see people use the AK also? Though I don't own one, I shall attempt to bring a friend and he only owns an AK.

Thanks (again - again)

take a look at this thread....I think its all covered.

http://www.rwva.org/yabbse/index.php?topic=1734.0

The AK is OK works out best with shorter 10 or 20 round mags. The longer mags on the AK cause a fair amount of grief when they "monopod" in low prone, they are fine for off-hand and sitting. One or two shorter mags is all you need.

Feel free to keep asking questions. Always glad to answere them.

I shot my first Appleseed with an SKS...you'll learn a lot about you AND your rifle. Make sure to take an SKS/AK sight adjustment tool with you so that you can adjust your front sight for windage and elevation and have plenty of stripper clips.

As long as you have those things you'll be fine.

Also, make sure you have:

Water
Blanket or old carpet to lay on
ELBOW AND KNEE PADS!
Lots of Ammo...(Appleseed is about shooting!)
Sling

Have fun! and take a youngster or new shooter with you

And my internal fire to shoot my first Appleseed grows hotter.......:)
Starting my purchases this week
Ammo
Garand Sling for the SKS
New sight tool (have one.... somewhere...)
Tech-Sight

This will get me through the winter now.....

Thanks guys.
