Just got this beautiful 586. It's a little heavy but helps with the recoil. I was shooting .38 all day yesterday and it was very smooth and controllable. 357 was a little punchy but I was never used to it so..
 
Congrats on the new revolver. A word of caution though, based on an observation at the last revolver match I shot in (last Sunday).

One guy was shooting 38s in his 357 and had been through 3 stages. In the 4th stage he was running low on ammo and decided to fill his last speed-loader with magnums. As luck would have it he ran through the other loaders and had to use the six magnums to finish. Not only did he have trouble seating them. When it came time to eject the empties they had to be pounded out.

Be sure to clean those chambers THOROUHLY after running 38s through it or you may have trouble when you try magnums.

This is good advise. In my case, I prefer not to shoot .38s from my .357s for that very reason. Anyway, this gives you a good reason to add a couple of .38s to the stable as well. (if you haven't already) In fact, I much prefer to plink away with .38s anyway. :)
 
Congrats on the NICE-lookin' 586!!!...they are GREAT guns...I've got two--wish I had more--and the OLD six-incher I've got is one of the LAST guns I'd EVER part with...somewhere over 30K rounds thru it, NO broken parts...but it DOES need a "Re-blue" pretty badly!!!
Yours looks like an early 586...mebbe' a 586-no dash or a dash one or two...more info, please!!!....mikey357
 
Congratulations on a fine revolver. I personally think the 586's are the most handsome of the large frame Smith's. I have always wanted a 2 1/2 " M586. Perhaps not the most practical barrel legenth......but oh are they pretty !...as is yours.

I picked up a used 586 made in 1983. I've had it for several months now and I love it. I had the choice of a pristine model 19 or the 586, both in about the same shape (that is to say GREAT!) The model 19 felt really nice in my hand but I opted to go with the stronger of the two.

It is my first revolver and I Love it! It has helped my shooting a great deal to be able to practice slooow, double action shooting.

Somebody needs to clean his guns more often. :scrutiny: He had to be neglecting that wheelie for it to happen after what apparently was only a few rounds on match day. Or he was using VERY dirty ammo.

Almost bought the new 586. I really liked it. But the seven charge holes were a deal breaker for me.
 
I picked up a 4" 586 today for $325.00 OTD,little holster wear,no flame cutting and locks up tight.I was looking for a GP-100 once again i fell for the smith.
