S&W Model 10 2" snub. When loaded with both A Zoom snap caps and real cartridges, the snaps and cartridges both rattle around a little in the chamber. Not sideways but front to back. Rattles both in safe mode and full lock up. Is this typical of the model 10?

Model 10-7, recently purchased used. Probably mid eighties. Everything else looks real good, it was police officer owned. Might have a lot of rounds through it but the bore looks pretty nice. Grips appear new.

well, if it was an older one i would say be careful- you will probably be ok with this newer one- nevertheless you might want to have a local gun expert take a look- if it is excessive there may be some options- i cant remember the terminology but a fix would involve doing something with the crane.

I should add that only two of the cartridges rattle. The two in the chambers closest to the cylinder release where the frame is lipped on the left side. Cartridges on the right side don't rattle.

maybe its possible that the revolver was dropped on its side slightly bending one cylinder ear over... ? ...

at any rate all of this is dependent on "seeing" the revolver

Yes, this is normal for all revolvers. It is called "headspace" and if it didn't do that, the case heads would drag on the recoil shield and bind up the gun.

Thanks Oro.

I suspected this had to be normal because everything else on the firearm looks really nice and well cared for. This is my first revolver purchase after a dozen autos. I like the revolver!

My next question would be how many officers or concealers get made for a BUG with one of these little rattlers? Gravity helps, off course, but I could see this firearm being a little noisy in a jog with a pocket carry.

My guess is that by the time they are running after the perp on foot, the "jig" is already up! But you are very correct, people do note the slight rattle the rounds make when you run or jog with a revolver. It's not that loud, but it is noticeable to the wearer/carrier.

The ammo is rattling in the chambers? That's normal. The rounds have to have some clearance or you couldn't load the gun. End shake is the cylinder rattling in the frame.

If you don't have confidence in a S&W's safety, and if no one has fired it like it is, you may want to contact S&W (800-331-0852) with it's SN. If new enough to be covered by their 'Lifetime Warranty', they may look it over for free.

Now - I have just shaken my only loaded revolvers, my CC & HD revolvers: 2" 10-11, 4" 64-8, 2.5" 296, & 1.9" 642-2. All rattle - the rounds are loose in the chambers. As others have said, that's normal.

I reload - and know why I re-size - it's to promote uniformity and a small enough size to permit easy reloading of even a moderately dirty revolver. I feel what you are seeing and hearing is normal.

Open the cylinder and look at the recoil shield.

Notice there is an extra clearance cut on the left side?

It is perfectly normal for them to rattle.
