S&W Model 29 question

IIRC the newest like I have is 629-6 (with (yuk) spider hole!)

Let's see re the dash two and dash three .........

-2, 1988 - internal changes, integral scope mounts available on 8 3/8" barrels.

-3, 1989 - longer stop notch, bolt block added, fixed hand.

The pinned barrel was dropped BTW with arrival of dash one - also the counterbore on cyl.

629 first introduced (dash nothing ) in 1979.

HTH

Chris, when you mention that the pin/recess was dropped are you talking about the 629 or the 29? I have an 8 3/8 29-2 that is pinned and recessed.

I love them and shoot the crap out of mine! FYI, the dash 4 in stainless is the most desirable since it's the first with the enhancement package and still has the traditional hammer mounted firing pin. YES the stainless dash 4s and above are stronger than the pretty blued guns.

Josh - yes I was referencing 629.

So - yours is 29-2 eh - ah well - 1982 for M29 saw the dash three as the stage at which the pinned and recessed was dropped. So blued does not follow stainless.

I was quoting that info from 2nd Edition Smith & Wesson Std catalog.

I believe the endurance package on the 629 went in between -2 and -3 In fact, IIRC there are some -2e guns that have the endurance package.

Any 629 with a dash number that is 2e or greater should be about the same strength unless there's more to the story.

Why all this talk of the M629 when the question was about a M29?
The M29 goes up to the -8 series which is the Mountain Gun.

The only difference between the 29-2 and 29-3 was that the -2 (made fron 1961-1982) had recessed chambers and a pinned barrel while the -3 (1982-1988) did not.

The -4 (1988-1990) had the endurance package.

Actually those who like to shoot heavy Buffalo Bore and Garrett style loads prefer the -5 over the -4.
The -5 (1990-1994) had the longer cylinder stop notch and improved bolt block.

The -5 was also the last series to be made with NO MIM parts whatsoever.
