I am looking at a S&W Model 37 2" from the 1970's with a pinned barrel that is 99% with original box and all paperwork, ect from new. The original owner only test fired it. What would the value be and how collectible is that model. Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone.

That would bring around 400 here. The only Big issue I can say about a 37 is that first, NO +P. The 37 and other alloy frame Smiths from that era had an issue with frame cracks around the thin part if the frame, right under where the barrel screws in to the frame. Usually, if shot with standard loads, you are ok. Nothing Hot at all. This issue has been mentioned here on THR and also The S&W forum in depth. My Dad left me his 37 when he passed on. After reading about the cracks, I put it away and bought another carry piece.

This. In 2014, I've seen a 37, a 38 and a Model 12 with the crack.

I agree with you on the wisdom of refraining from plus P loads in model 37s, especially older "pre-magnum" framed versions. That said, I've always heard that the cracks were a result of over-torquing and not hot loads. My concern with too-hot loads is topstrap stretching. Still, I agree it's wise not to over stress those classy little pocket guns.

70's m37 with near new finish and original box and grips will usually bring a whole lot more than $400, but maybe not right now. There are killer deals on new guns out there, and it's affecting the whole market - new and used. I believe it's this glut that's creating a buyer's market. I sold my 80% model 37 without a box for $325, but that was last year. I could've got more, but I sold it to my brother. I've got a couple of guns on consignment right now, but not much interest. And that's good for the OP. Best wishes.
