S&W N-Frames

I know very little about S&W revolvers. What model numbers encompass the N-frames? I really, really like the look of the large framed, older blued S&Ws with wood grips.

Nate - to me the N frames are about the ultimate in Smith revo's. I daresay you have seen pics of mine here and there - happy to repost them if you wish.

I have two barrel lengths in M27-2 - these are 38spl/.357 mag. Then we have the M29 and M629 - the latter being stainless - and this is .44 mag.

I also have the M28 ''Highway Patrolman" which is a slightly economy version of the M27 - but not by too much.

Then for moonclip useage I have the M625 - takes .45acp. That too is stainless as against the M25 blued.

That covers some of the N frames for now - the ones I have. Tight for time so can't check on the others right now.
 
I have exactly one N frame, a model 629-4.

Ahhhhhh man... my trigger finger itches just thinking about it...:eek:

Then all the newer stainless guns with 6 serials, and alloy guns with 3 serials, 7 and 8 shot models, etc etc etc.
 
I've had many, many handguns. Nothing surpasses the accuracy of my .357 Magnum, 8-shot, N-Frame, PC 627! Dennis

All of the above are carbon steel models

Several of the above numbers can be found in stainless steel versions preceeded by a 6 (ie 629, 657) or a 3 or 4 indicating lighweight models (ie 327PD) usually followed by the suffix PD for "Personal Defense".

Oh yeah I almost forgot, the Model 610 stainless revolver chambered for 10mm auto in moon clips.
 
S&W refined their N-frame revolver line for 1950.
Model 1950 simply means short action/taperered barrel .44 or .45 N-frame.

There were 1950 Military models and 1950 Target models.
Of course the Military models had fixed sights while the Target models had adjustable sights.

Don't forget the pre-numbered guns! Like the 38/44 Heavy duty (pre-20?), 38/44 Outdoorsman (pre-23?), 357 magnum (pre-27), Highway Patrolman (pre-28) and the Registered Magnum (Pre-Pre-27). Then you have the Target model of 1955 (Pre-25) and the Target model of 1950 (Pre-26?).

From 12 oclock going clockwise:

I thought about a model of 1950, but my model of 1955 has been heavily worked over and is a dream to shoot. If I find a model of 1950 in good shape I would probably buy it but I am "not looking" (as if any collector can say that).

I looked into the triple lock hard, and after a bit of negotiation passed on one. Just did not feel right and the deal seemed a bit "off" so I passed. Some day I will get a triple lock target, but again, the time has to be right.

My current goal is more outdoorsman's, I really need a nice pre-war and a pre-war shooter. 38/38-44/357mag is about my limit of "enjoyment" for shooting. You get into the 44mags and it ceases to be fun (for me), thus no pre-29's etc.

I really should get some 4" heavy duties while I am at it.

I have sort of given up on getting more Registered's. Just to expensive for my blood right now. I think we need a recession or the stock market needs to take off so they sort of come free.
 
Was that not the Pre-22?

I am doing this by memory, so let me know if I was wrong on that. I tend to focus on the 38's/357's so when I get out of my area I start a guessing.

just too lovely!!!if i could have only one smith revo itd be the mountain gun 629 i have now.but its a wonderfull thing i dont have to.

n frames rock!!!!!

dream n frame;a fixed sight heavy duty in stainless with hogue monos ahhsome!!! smith make me this gun and my soul is yours. jkn
