Here's a wild and real big contrast for you guys/gals. I have a Ruger P89 in 9mm and can sell it to buy a new S&W Shield in 9mm . I had a Shield and it worked awesomely even with my own reloads and so does the Ruger P89. You know how us gun guys get and we get a little bored and such with things. I wondering what you guy's and Gal's thoughts are on trading a Ruger P89 in 9mm for a S&W Shield in 9mm or just keeping the Ruger P89 ?
This is not a purpose gun , it's just a gun to shoot and have fun with , nothing to get too serious with and all . Thanks for you vote or opinion.

For me.....

The Shield because I like consistent trigger pull and the P89 is a little to big in the grip... for me.

Other than my hand vs the the P89 grip size, I have nothing against the P89.

If you like the Ruger then keep it. I have a 9mm Shield and love it. But I see no need to own two of them.

The P89 will just be broken in when the Shield is worn out.

The Ruger P-Series Autos are tanks. Kinda bulky but virtually indestructible.

Keep The Tank. If you want a Shield, save up and buy one.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I've never shot the Shield. I still have the P89 I bought NIB in '97. The large, blocky grip took a little getting used to, but it soon came to feel natural. It is accurate and performs flawlessly. I's my Ol' Reliable, one I would be hard pressed to sell. If I should die in my sleep, Ol' Reliable will be sleeping right next to me in my night stand In fact, I got rid of an otherwise perfectly good girlfriend after she told me I needed to get rid of that gun.

I don't really see the point in owning two of the same gun, personally. Having a full size as well as a compact 9mm really broadens your abilities. Maybe sell your P89 and get another full size, or a revolver, or a rifle, or something else to add some variety.

This is a conversation I can talk about!

I own the P89. Nothing wrong with it.

Just shot a range rental Shield. Two malfunctions in one box of ammo. Didn't like the feel. The Ruger points better for me.

YMMV

So far I think I'm gonna keep my P89 . The more I think about it , you just cant find a more tougher and rugged tank like the Ruger P-Series pistols.

This argument reminds me of the S&W vs. Ruger revolver ads from years ago. You can't 'wear out' either the Shield or the P89 unless you are a professional shooter. Pick the one that you shoot best with and be happy.

Since the P89 isn't being made anymore, unless there is something wrong with it, or you just plain don't like it, keep it. It'll never be a collectors gun, but neither will the Shield.

For the next few years anyway, I don't see the Shield going out of production.

Personally, I have enough smaller handguns to satisfy the concealed carry itch, but the Ruger P89 is my only full size.

If you want the Shield, set a budget and buy one. Something like handguns shouldn't have to be an either/ or.

Never a big fan of the Ruger P89. The S&W Shield is a much more ergonomic gun for me to shoot.

If you have a nice shooting P89, keep it.

Agree 100%. I'm against replacing a good solid discontinued gun that is becoming hard to find, with the latest & greatest that you can find everywhere.

Since you said it's a gun for fun, keep the Ruger. It's a clunky old tank of a handgun, a little offbeat in today's polymer framed world. You'll be able to add the Shield to you collection anytime in the next few decades since S&W is churning them out. (Assuming 2A rights hold!)

If it were for carry, I'd have voted for the Shield (& I have one for carry). I had a P95, sold it, and keep looking at the P85's, P89's & P94's. They have character!

Thanks guys for all the opinions and votes. I am keeping the P89. I got to thinking about it and I guess I just got "new gun" fever . I love my Ruger P89 with it being extremely reliable and eats all my reloads and any store bought rounds too. I just went out and got two more 17 rd flush fitting magazines for it :D . I can even detail strip this thing completely apart with no troubles which means a lot . Very reliable . YEP , Gonna keep the old girl !

It may be clunky and bulky but it's darn reliable. Built like a tank . To me its just a heavier and sturdier built Beretta M9 . I normally hate slide-mounted safety's but in this case it's all good.

I have a similar situation. Own a Ruger P95 for the bedside and a Shield 9mm for carry. Both are great guns. Keep the P89 and save up for the Shield.
