I was wondering if I can safely swap the bolt/bolt carrier combo between two different Bushmaster or two Colt uppers. Are there any headspace or other issues that must be addressed when doing this?

For legal reasons the factory will tell you to check the headspace if you swap bolts. However, I can tell you that all Bushmaster bolts will interchange if they are not worn out or otherwise damaged.

Hope this helps.

90 out of 100 times you can swap them without issue.
Just to be safe buy and use a no-go headspace guage when you switch a bolt between upper receiver assemblies.
Charging handles are 100% interchangable, they won't affect headspace one way or another, it is the bolt you need to be concerned with.

Unless there is a lot of wear or some item is out-of-spec, you should have no headspace issues swapping between Bushmasters; but it is always a good idea to check.

One thing to be aware of though is some maintain that swapping bolts between rifles can accelerate wear on the bolt since each bolt and barrel combo wears in slightly differently. Haven't seen any evidence of it myself; but I don't often swap bolts between guns either.

My friend was an armorer in the Marines and he says they swapped bolts all day long. That is the point of mil-spec, all the parts should interchange. If it will cause faster wear or not is beyond me. I have swapped bolts with no issues and the amount of shooting that it would take to wear out a bolt is more than you can afford to shoot. You will wear out the bbl before you wear out the bolt.
