with a rail.

I've been Glock and revolver guys for years, thus have not payed much attention to 1911 developments.

Just curious about about any options available in above set up (full size aluminum or scandium framed 1911 with a rail for light).

Thanks!

For what it's worth, scandium is used as an alloy with aluminum. The amount of scandium in the S&W 1911's is actually quite small. The frames are primarily aluminum.

While I'm a 1911 guy, I'm not that familiar with aluminum guns or those with rails. I know Springfield has a Lightweight Operator, and S&W touts their scandium models, though I don't know if they make a railed version.

I thought Colt did, but I couldn't find one http://www.coltsmfg.com/Catalog/ColtPistols.aspx

If it's a lightweight frame you want,

STI makes a poly frame double stack http://www.stiguns.com/the-sti-tactical-5-0/

The Smith E series at about 1,300.00 is the one that comes to mind. I like that gun a lot. I have seen it as low as 1,100 on gun broker. I know they have had a scandium model for many years. The one Gunsite edition was scandium, prior to the e series. Other guns I have recently seen seem to be more revolvers for some reason. I had an "alloy" Taurus 38 that weighed 11 ozs for about 10 years. It was a nice carry gun.

I fondled a S&W E series at the LGS a while back, beautiful gun. The owner said it just came in and he was planning to keep it himself. I just picked up a CZ -75D PCR last week, it's got a light weight aluminum alloy frame and it seems very well made and feels fantastic. I can't wait to get it to the range.

I like alloy framed 3" to 4 1/4" guns, but not 5" ones. To much flip with the heavier slide on the light frame. I would stick with a stell frame for a full sized 1911, or get a "Commander length" alloy framed 1911.

I have a railed 5" S&W 1911PD and really like it. However, I very much want the round butt 4.25" E Series. I'd give up the rail for one of those.
