Scope Fit / Stock Fit Question

Bought a Win 70 in .30-06 after I heard the news about Winchester.

Am putting a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on it and was trying the Tally Lightweight mounts. Don't think they're going to work out though. With the mounts situated to allow the scope as far back as possible and with the scope as far back in the mounts as it will go, I'm still not quite there on the proper eye relief. It's close, but I still have to stretch my neck just a little further forward than my natural cheek weld. Disappointed because I like the simplicity of the Tally mounts.

Anyone else had this problem? Think that different mounts would solve the problem?

And finally, is it more likely a stock fit issue?

I'm 6'1" and have never had problems with a factory stock fit before. Of course, my only other hunting rifles are a Rem 700 and a Marlin .30-30, so I don't have an abundance of experience in this area.

Sounds like your stock needs to be shortened a little to fit you. I'm only 5' 7" and a lot of stocks are too long for me. Put the butt of the rifle on top of your shoulder and pull it back until you can see well through the scope. If you can do this you might want to consider shortening the stock.

This was my suspicion. The more I think about it, the less I think different mounts would substantially change where the scope is sitting.

Might take this one in to a gunsmith and get some advice.

My notion of proper length of pull is to grasp the rifle with my finger on the trigger and hold the butt into the crook of my arm, inside the elbow. I like 1/4" to 1/2" of clearance, to allow for winter clothing.

Depending on the recoil, better to be a bit far back than a bit too close. A bloused eyebrow is not a Good Thing.

FWIW, the vast majority of mounts/bases I've used throughout the years have been Weavers or Weaver style. They ain't purty, but they work.
