I've got a cool little 1X-4X Bushnell scope that I don't know what to do with. Had it on my FAL Para, but I prefer using iron sights on it. I think it might be more appropriate on my SAR1 AK since it has terrible sights anyway. So I guess I need a quick detachable scope mount with a weaver rail (The SAR1 has a side rail).

Anybody using a scope mount they particularly like and would recommend?

Please don't recommend another scope, I want to use the one I have.

This replaces your rear sight, and has a sight channel built in (basically it's an iron sight with rails)

Kalinka optics lowpro mount here is one on a customers Rommy G build.

That particular rifle is extremally accurate, he has a POSP 8X42 on a second rail rather than the high standard POSP etc... these rails sit dead center of the barrel bore and are rock solid, I think they are about $34

I knew the night shift would hook me up! :)

Kalinka's got a lot of options. Ah, I found that low mount for $35 in the Bargain Bin section. One of those "slight cosmetic imperfection" deals. Cool!

Dstorm, what's a Rommy G? A custom build on Romanian parts?

the best thing to do is just get a new top dust cover with a rail on it, i picked mine up for 10 bucks at a local gunshop, it works pretty well as seen in this photo

another cool thing you can get is this
AKS-101.png
gives your four more rails, to put whatever on, currently i have a surefire light, a laser, and a handle, and when you are not using the rails there are rubber guards you can put on, heres a link for it as well http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AKS101-56003-2712.html

Yep, its a rifle I built for him a few months ago on a 1978 Rommy G kit, he wanted something to mess with the AR guys for 3 gun so.... Its a super "sleeper" AK that is a real CAR stock on one of my alluminum mounts with an 8 oz mercury filled buffer inside of it, that brake on the muzzle is another one of my custom designs in all the rifle has less recoil than a .22 mag, the iron sights are adjustable for windage and Elevation, the barrel is actually a reworked Yugo hammer forged USA match grade barrel. The rear trunion was squared to the barrel and then riveted into an Arsenal 1.6 mm thick reciever, the FCG is a Redstar arms set with the trigger setup as a single stage 2.5 lb pull with zero over travel the pretravel is 1/16" the gas piston is a custom of mine That I discontinued as they are too labor intensive, the gasport was drilled so that it just cycles the action with his match ammo, its running a milled recoil assembly with Wolf spring, the selector is cut for bolt hold open the 30 rnd mag in it is onea our shop mags he uses Chicom type 68 20 rnd bolt hold open mags with 8 dedicated to this rifle It was back in the shop to add a lil extra clearance to the bolt rails before it was to be sent to get Parked then moly resined, he was concerned the tolerances might be a lil tight after being painted etc... But it was fine, the furniture is all rubber coated ecxept the CAR stock the finish was done in OD Grn for the reciever/barrel then all the controls and the scope mounts and mags were done in Coyote Tan it looked really nice with the flat black rubberized furniture next time its in the shop I'll get an after pic of it.

BTW that rifle does exactly what he wanted it to do...... smokes the AR guys everytime he brings it out :) The next time it comes in we are swapping out the gas block for a stainless one with gas shutoff valve so he can go manual action when he really wants to reach out and touch something..... I woulda installed it before it was finished but it wasn't outa the prototyping stage in time so we are just gonna be very careful installing it and will split the old one off...... no he didn't have it done all at once it was originally setup with just the GT 1.6 mm reciever and the Yugo barrel...... he was so impressed he kinda went nuts over it LOL

Terdfurgusen, those dustcover mounts are the absolute worst ya can use for actual accuracy...... thats why they are so cheap the target market is the new AK owner who doesn't know any better, they are totally unstable for actual scope use as they shift with EVERY shot......... ya'd be much better served with a side mount, there is a reason ya don't see the dust cover mounts used on experienced ak owned rifles...... they are the bane of the AK world...... And an easy way to spot the in-experienced AK owner (no insult intended partner its just onea those facts)

I use a red dot on mine, so i am not aiming for DEAD on accuracy like with a scope, i havent had any problems with it having to readjust the scope, but you do make a good point, i can see how that could affect it, maybe it doesnt bother mine to much cause the damn thing fits on so tight, i had to take a dremel to it SEVERAL times to get it to fit on right and is still a bitch to get on and off, but it serves its purpose none the less, my AR is what i use for accuracy

The main problem that I have with the side-mount rail systems is that they don't sit low enough- off center is an issue as well, but fairly minor (since I'm a righty and the left-side offset is minimal). How low do the kvar and IOR mounts allow the scope to sit?

Mike

I agree Mike. That's why I liked this one:

A rock solid AK side mount to Weaver rail precision machined to fit any AK, AKM, Saiga or other AK variant. Made of solid seluminium for extreme strength, the Weaver rail will fit any standard weaver rings. This is made by the same factory from the same materials as the regular POSP rifle scopes and comes in a dark grey hammer finish or black finish. The Weaver rail mount is positioned very close to the bore centerline. The universal AK ‘V’ clamp design gives you a quick-detach mount that holds zero when reinstalled, added durability and looks great on your weapon. This low profile version puts the rail very close to the receiver for excellent cheek weld and shooting comfort. Perfectly fits all AK’s with standard military-style stocks. Use our mounting and tightening guide in our 'Manuals' section for the best fit. The AK ‘V’ clamp can easily be mounted to any of these rifles with the standard side rail: AK-47, AK-74, Vepr, Saiga, K-var, KBI, Hesse, Century and Arsenal USA copies, Romak1/2, SLR-93, SLR-95, SLR-101, MK-11, SAR, WUM, SA85M, WASR (check for installed rail), Maddi, Norinco and Poly-Tech copies. The SVD/SKS clamp will fit any of these rifles with the standard side rail: SVD, SKS, NDM-96, Russian Tigr, Romak-3, SSG-97 and PSL rifles.

Whatever mounting you wind up with you'll probably end up needing a decent cheek pad to get a good cheek weld to the stock. Ended up putting Blackhawk pads on the Arsenals and Saigas and surprised how the group sizes shrunk.
