Looking for some input on scoping my new (to me) Remington 700 LV SF in 7mm-08. 22" fluted stainless barrel, composite Bell & Carlson stock. Used for target shooting and Eastern woods hunting -- deer, black bear, moose. Maybe someday out West for elk, pronghorn, sheep, caribou.

My preferences are (in ascending order of price):

Weaver 4x38 Classic K4 Dual-X reticle ($125)
Weaver 2.5-7x32 Classic V7 Dual-X ($150)
Bushnell 2-7x32 Elite 3200 Multi-X ($174)
Leupold 2-7x33 Rifleman Wide Duplex ($175)
Leupold 4x33 FX-II Wide Duplex ($270)
Leupold 2-7x33 VX-II Duplex ($300)
Weaver 1.5-5x32 Grand Slam Dual-X ($330)
Burris 1.75-5x32 Signature Safari Taper Plex w/Posilock ($375)

Thoughts, suggestions? I want to stay below 3-9x40mm.

The Leupold VXII 2x-7x/33 is, IMO, the perfect general purpose scope. The 3x-9x/40 sits up higher, and on some rifles that creates an inconsistent cheek weld issue.

You'll love the glass on the burris. I don't know if I.75-5 will be enough out west. I'm using a burris 175-5X20 for the eastern woods on my 7mm-08

So why the VX-II instead of the Rifleman? I prefer the wide duplex reticle. Is the VX-II THAT much better?

I believe to get into a fully multi coated lenses you'd have to go into a VX-II

All Burris's are fully multi coated

NONE OF THE ABOVE

My Remington Mod7 in 7mm-08 carries an older Leupold Vari-X III in 2.5-8x (38mm).

I know it's now a ~400.00 scope, but its very light, relatively compact, and unquestioned quality.

It's a perfect match and balance to the Rifle.

I purchased a Burris Full-field II 3-9x w/ballistic plex reticle to put on it but It was "too much scope" for the "LITTLE RIFLE".

I took the VariX-III off my MkX Mauser in .338/06 and put the Burris on it> A
perfect Match too !!!

Personnally; starting from a clean slate, I would get the Burris "Short-Mag" in 3-9x with the Ballistic-plex reticle.

It's the right size, right combination of power range, and a long-range reticle to Match.

Current retail is running around $289.00
Much less than some of your choices.

My 3rd choice would be the Weaver 3-9x x38mm, as it's very close to the Leupold Vari-X III in size and weight.

I have a Leupold 2-7x-33mm. It looks good on some smaller rifles, but just dosen't look "balanced" or "matched" to a rifle like your Remington.

The Burris 4.5-14x might be a good balance for you; But, you can't go wrong with the Fullfield 3x-9x with BallisticPlex. They can be had for $189.00 plus shipping, or $199.00 with a 12-24x Spotting Scope or 8x-32 Binoculars (What I got, already had the compact spotter, which I like also).
