High all.
My Step father has been using a Winchester 94 to take deer for longer than I've been around. He likes that rifle, but hasn't got the eyesight for using the iron sights any more.
He's tried different scope arangements, side mount and over the top, but doesn't like any of them. To get the scope low enough over the bolt he had to use an offset hammer and hated it.
So I'm thinking that a forward mount and an intermediate eye relief scope ought to do the trick.

Anyone out there tried this on the vinerable old Winchester? How did it work out? The mount is around $55 from Brownells. I haven't priced scopes yet. Suggestions? Money is an object.

Ask this question in a little under a year, and I should have an answer. I've spent the last couple weeks wondering about putting a scope on my Model 94. I've decided not to, since it's an older model and in excellent (ie. collector) condition.

However, I'm planning on keeping an eye out for a beat-up/newer model that would be pretty inexpensive. Ideally, I'd like to use a forward-mounted Weaver rail, and get a scout-style scope (probably a Leupold). I'd also like to see if it would be possible to put the glass on some quick-release rings and replace the irons with some form of tritium-augmented sights.

I found a rail that will work in the Natchez catalog, but it requires some gunsmithing, which precludes me from using it on my current 94.

Then again, I may change platforms a bit and base it on a Marlin 1895 in either 45/70 or .450 Marlin.

I've set up a Marlin 336 with the Express Sights forward scope mount (see here) and a Leupold 2.5x Scout scope. Very fast target acquisition, and within the effective range of the cartridge, it's all you need. The mount is available for the Winchester (although the XS photo shows a Mauser - must write to their Webmaster... :D ).

If your stepfather's eyesight isn't too good, you might want to consider the Burris scout scope, which is slightly cheaper than the Leupold, and has a heavier reticle, thus easier to see.
