I just finish browsing/reading the archive for scopes but I was not able to get to the second page. Anyway, I know this has been pounded so many times, I plan to get a Leupold scope but I noticed the there are 3 variations. What are the differences among VX-I, VX-II and VX-III? I have not included the Vari models since they will be out of the market.

With the rifle I'm getting, do I need to remove the iron sights or do I just buy high bases and rings?

I plan to get the 3-9X40, how do I set it up? Should I put the magnification between 3 and 9 when zeroing? I have a 22LR Marlin but I seldom use higher than 3X. I noticed that my shot placement differ when I use higher than 3X.

TIA,

I know you're setting up this rifle for hunting, but I'm gonna move it to Rifle Country. No biggie.

The Leupold website gives as good an explanation of the differences in their models as I can do, from what I've read there.

For your purposes, I'd go with their low end scopes. They're more than adequate for the job. As far as prices, there are distributors with online websites. You can check the THR "Links" for some URLs.

You can probably use low bases, for 40mm objective lenses or smaller. While the iron sights might be slightly visible in the bottom of the lens, it won't bother anything. It's certainly of minor importance compared to getting a good cheek weld when mounting the rifle to your shoulder.

When you first mount the scope, don't tighten it but "just barely". You need to check the cross hairs for vertical/horizontal, for one thing. The other is eye relief. You want a full picture, but far enough away from you such that recoil doesn't give you a "bloused eyebrow". You can readily do all this at your dining table. Just don't be in a hurry.

A note about gunsmithing tools, particularly screwdrivers: Most screwdrivers are wedge-shaped. Buy several different sizes at any garage sale where you find them. Then, get access to a bench grinder. Reshape the screwdrivers for the different widths of the screws on your gun. Then, reshape the flat sides to "hollow ground", where the sides are parallel for a quarter-inch or so. If you do this, the screwdriver won't tend to jump out of the slot and scratch the screw head or the adjacent metal.

Another note: The money you save on el cheapo garage sale screwdrivers might well allow you to buy an el cheapo bench grinder from such as Harbor Freight. :) You can often find 25-cent tools at garage sales that beat Wally World's $3 or $4...

(Obviously I'm a cheapskate SOB.)

I'd probably get the Leupold VX-II 3-9X40, that's all my wallet would allow me. Thanks all.

Finally got the scope, just waiting for the rifle. I hate this 10 day cooling period.
