I recently purchases a S&W 637 (Airweight Chief's Special) and I'm looking for self defense ammo for it. My first choice would be Speer Short Barrel Gold Dot 38 Spl +P, but I've heard you should limit the amount of +P ammo shot with the S&W Airweights? Is this true? If so, what other SD ammo (non +P) would people recommend?

+P in airweight J frames...

You are correct to avoid shooting 1,000s of +P or +P+ rounds out of a small frame lightweight S&W revolver but the newer models are +P rated and can take more abuse than older J frames. ;)

Most +P or +P+ loads are far better for protection/duty use but a good non +P target load in the same weight/design would work for training/marksmanship.

My 637-2, purchased five years ago, is okay for +p ammo -- says so right on the barrel. Gold Dot SB is an excellent choice for self defense. Mine is loaded with Remington 158gr SWCHPs -- the FBI load. Unlike the Federal and Winchester versions of the FBI load, Remington's bullets are dead soft lead and will expand out of a snubby. I probably will switch over to Gold Dots (I have the 9x19 124gr version in my Browning Hi Power) when I have shot off all of my present load.

Cordially, Jack
