Shooting Tripod guys; Leveling Base VS. Ball Head

I've had this top / head unit from ZRODelta for many years. It works perfect for my Varmint / Hog hunting needs. It wasn't cheap, but I've never cared for the clamp style or ball type heads.

@Double Naught Spy - the advantage I see of this over a ball head…no flopping side to side. You are mechanically limited to tilt and pan…no “yaw” or “roll”. A ball head will allow the “platform” to lay over on it’s side…just my “read’ on this…

@Txhillbilly can better explain….

You are 100% correct !!! I hate the flopping over ability of a ball head, especially if you are using it at night and need to quickly change the vertical position of the rifle while panning it side to side.
The only negative thing that I have with this mount is the sealed ball bearing units in the base are so smooth and easy for the head to move side to side when you're behind the rifle. For hunting, it was never much of an issue given the ranges that we mostly shoot, but when using it while shooting long range - 600 yards to a mile, it caused a lot of issues trying to hold the gun steady.
I found an easy solution for that by using a rubber plumbing pipe connector and a hose clamp. I can apply enough pressure around the top & center sections of the base by tightening the clamp to the point where the head has a good amount of resistance keeping it from moving side to side.

I repurpose old camera tripods, and put a makeshift base on the top made from 3/4" plywood and bungee a small sandbag to it. A little krylon spray paint to make it look less like junk from Fred Sanford's front yard. Ugly but cheap and effective.
