Shotgun as only HD weapon?

I think I have decided to keep the Glock, or some other pistol. After thinking about it, I realized that it would be a good idea to have a gun downstairs for when there is a "friendly" knock on the door.

Thanks for everyone's advice and input.

There's no universally correct answer here. One size sure doesn't fit all.

Shotguns are part of my defense system. But I'm the only sure nuff shotgunner here. Everyone(Youngest is 20) here can operate a mid sized revolver a lal Model 10, 64, 640, Python, First Model Trooper, etc. So, our plan includes revolvers posted SAFELY about the Casa.

Evaluate your needs and strengths, then do what you can to tilt the odds in your favor.....

Rusty you have a good eye.

The Sellier & Bellot #4 buckshot shell uses a fiber undershot wad and a plastic over powder wad and a thin plastic cover over the shot.

I'd guess that's the plastic over shot piece in the hostage's neck and the fiber and plastic wad beside the BG's head.

I can't account for the hole above the BG's right eye from the slug. In the Wolf slugs the plastic wad is attached to the slug and stays with it in flight. Maybe this time the wad or part of it separated from the slug.

While SG's have their place and are good at what they do, I think you made the right decision.

Now, what should I do about this 16" Iowa Class battleship gun I have laying around? ;)

I like having a back up plan. You are thinking home defense and only having one gun....that is a bad plan. OK, here is a scenario for you to think about. 3am you hear someone kick in the door you grab the shotgun. You go to fire and click....the firing pin is broken or something else goes wrong....If that happens you will be kicking yourself for not having the Glock as a back up if the primary weapon fails... Redundancy is good. Death can result from not having a back up plan. ;)

Glad to see in the end you decided to keep it.

Me personally, I dont undestand why people insist on a shotgun...
I would rather have a high cap carbine...
Sure shotgun racking is a wonderful sound to intimidate - on the flipside it also gives up your location! I would rather spend the money on a weapon that is more versatile and has a much greater capacity....

On the flip side...a shotgun is MUCH cheaper, but if money was not an issue...
I would get something that works BETTER for IN HOME defense.

Higher capacity with a Carbine?

My Ithaca with a single load of 7 S&B 00 buckshot shells can put 84 hits on target.
With #4 buck it's 189 hits on target.
Now that's capacity.:D

Personally I'm not really that big a shotgun fan (for my use).
I've also got a couple loaded Carbines and rifles around the house.
But, within normal HD range there is hardly any gun more devastating than a shotgun loaded with #4 or 00 Buckshot or slugs.

Even a near miss of a few inches with Buckshot can still take a large chunk out of the BG.
A near miss with a bullet is a miss.

"a weapon that is much more versatile"....

uponus, please tell us how a rifle is versatile.

While rifles are wonderful at hitting things far off, shotguns do rifle stuff better than rifles do shotgun stuff.Wingshooting comes to mind.

Shotguns are sufficient

A Shotgun is really all you need for home defense. Sure a handgun has its advantages, but a shotgun can easily handle this task. However, a zombie or bug-in situation calls for more firepower than a mere shotgun. In those circumstances, multiple guns of different types (i.e. handguns, shotguns, and rifles) are necessary.

hahaha, a CARBINE....
like THIS....

so...50 rounds instead of 8....wow, for SHTF sounds GREAT to me, which is more versatile...HMMMMM...

Second, has built In EOTech similar sights! wow! your shotgun handles that?

Has 2400fps velocity...can actually shoot through soft body armor....your shotgun can do that?

SMALLER from shoulder to end....which would you rather drag around your house IF you HAD to....

NO RACKING! I guess you could get a semi auto shotgun.... still only 8 rounds vs 50? this is much better IN CASE YOU MISS THE FIRST SHOT.

ALMOST NO PERCEIVED RECOIL IN COMPARISON TO A SHOTGUN- you tell me which you get your sights on faster?

Is this enough? Sure, I know the price is higher...but that wasnt the question...

You defend that shotgun all day I know, your probably have one and you have a ton of experience with carbines eh?

If I want to use the 5.7x28 round I just use this.
At present this is one of my walking around the place at night guns.
I like the pistol but the PS 90 doesn't appeal to me.
FN57laserlight.gif

And as a comparison between the FN PS 90 and a shotgun.
A full load in the FN PS 90 is 50 rounds of 22cal size bullets.

Just two #4 S&B Buckshot shells have 54 22 cal size "bullets".
And you still have 135 "bullets" left (7 shot shotgun).

The 5.7x28 armor piercing round isn't available to civilians.

EOTech or similar sights can be mounted on shotguns, if necessary.

"You defend that shotgun all day I know, your probably have one and you have a ton of experience with carbines eh?"

Matter of fact I do have a ton of experience with Carbines and I still say that there's almost nothing as deadly at HD range as a shotgun loaded with #4 or 00 Buckshot or slugs.:D

And even experience with things that are close to Carbines.:D

I think you should get whatever works better for you.
Even though I believe the SG is the most devastating HD gun, it isn't my first choice because of my particular HD needs.
