It occurred to me, that "Shotgun News" has very little on shotguns.
There are popular magazines on Hunting big game, and mags on handguns, combat weapons, and so forth; but there are no magazines on shotguns on the shelf. At least, I haven't seen them.
So I'm wondering, if the shotgun is so simple, that it is not possible to market mags about them, and that hunting small game is so common, that a magazine article showing half a dozen cottontails, or some doves is superfluous.
I guess that's just the way it is.
Also, I suspect that many are drawn to shotguns as a Home Defense weapon, and they proceed to "trick it out" only to find that the thing just sits at home.
When I got my 12 guage, I thought about adding the WhizBang stuff, but when it came to buy, I just bought an ordinary sporting model. I've never regretted that. Full 28" barrel, it is a dual purpose weapon. The prospect of hunting with the shotgun, is far more exciting than the prospect of going fishing. (It's true!)
Not only that, I think Shotgun Sports are more diverse and more varied. There's a lot of stuff you can do with a shotgun. [I don't know what, but other people know that stuff!]
Take the Reloading aspect for example, and the option to PATTERN your shotgun. Shotgunning may be simple, but it doesn't mean it is entirely simplistic. There are aspects of shotgunning that are fairly sophisticated.
I notice that some shooters use light loads with great accuracy, and I realize that I'm not there yet; but the idea that a shotgun permits both immediate satisfaction, with lots of room for future refinement, has a certain appeal for the new owner.
What say you?
