Skinning a deer ?

I once was on a hunting trip, where the guy that got a deer, in a neighboring group of hunters, used a rope to secure the, field dressed, deer antlers to a tree. He then made numerous cuts to the deer's hide, tied another rope to the two ears of the deer, and the attached the rope to his truck bumper. He backed away from the tree, and the skin of that buck just peeled off the deer, just like peeling the skin off a banana.

Has anyone else ever seen this done ? Does anyone know what cuts are made ? I never saw any of those hunters again, but the ease with which the skinning was done, comes into my thoughts, after every hunting season since.
 
Actually, if a deer is skinned the same morning or evening it is shot, you can pull most of the hide off with your bare hands, and you can skip the "tying it to your vehicle's bumper" part. Either way, make sure that whatever rafter, branch, or device you are using to support the deer off the ground can take the strain from the combination of the deer's weight and strain of pulling off the hide without breaking or cracking. A 4"x4" put under a suspect looking rafter and cribbed up until it is wedged up tight as a brace helps if you are hanging more than one or two deer.

If I have a choice, I usually hang the deer upside down, hung from a gambrel or pipe inserted into cuts made between the bone and achilles tendon, or the deer equivalent of that. Get the deer as high as you can without making it too high to skin the back legs, as it gets hard to pull the hide off once you get around the front shoulders. Pulling off the hide while kneeling or crouching makes it just that much harder yet. Ideally, a come along or a winch that lets you raise the deer as you work your way down would keep it at a comfortable height.

My younger brother holds the family record for skinning a deer, which was under five minutes including cutting off the head and the forelegs.(He used to skin deer professionally at a meat locker by the Wisconsin-Illinois border, so he had a lot of practice!;) Timing stops when the inner tenderloins hit the grill:)
 
other game too?

how well would this technique work on a freshly killed rabbit or similar game? could you skin a rabbit like this so that the skin came off inside out in a tubelike manner? pretty cool info:rolleyes:
 
I learned a like trick for dressing a chicken at JWTC. Only we didnt get a knife.You pull the head off then pull the skin feathers and all off.If done right you dont have a mess to clean up.
