I've had an MAK90 for many moons, and some time back gave her a makeover with a new KVAR stock set and the necessary Tapco trigger parts for compliance. I'd love to put a slant break on her, but being an MAK90 the threads on the barrel were machined off. I'm guessing that welding is about the only way to go, but I figured I'd ask for opinions anyhow, as I do not and likely never will know everything about everything (and my wife will gladly back me up on that).

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my Maadi AK. What I did was to buy a thread die off ebay (for about $16 shipped) in pitch 1/2-28 right hand pitch. This is the same thread as an AR.

You can then use any AR brake, or there was a thread on the AK Forum that has the address for a guy that makes an AK slant brake with 1/2-28 RH threads. I bought that slant brake from him for $20 shipped and it fits and looks perfect! You just have to be careful and thread the barrel straight.

Hope this helps!

We make our KA-1230 brake/suppressor for the non-threaded MAK90 barrels, but we don't carry a slant brake in that setup. I've been thinking about doing some CAD work on it and having a small run of them done, we get a couple requests now and then for them.

grilledchese - How much hand fitting did you have to do to get the K-Var stock to fit since the receiver on the MAKs is thicker than the standard AK.

Well, there is some fitting...
I ended up using an old hand file on the stock. I'm just guessing, but maybe 1/16'' or less from each side and the bottom got the job done. the hand guards also need some trimming from the front and back ends. You can make them fit without a trim, but they'll be REALLY tight, and the top handguard might not twist on at all.
It's a little work, but nothing complicated. Just keep shaving off a little at a time until it fits right.

Here's what my rifle looked like before and now:

Oh, and after researching Yankee John's suggestion, I found this website:

http://www.preciseinnovationsllc.com/old%20pages/threadingkits.htm

They offer threading kits for darn near everything at decent prices. I think I'll give them a shot.
