Congratulations Karate- you have purchased one of
my all time favorite 9m/m's! :) Very sleek in design, almost
perfect balance, and those very nice factory walnut grips.
WOW! :uhoh: What else could a person ask for? ;) And
naw, the model 59 with its high capacity magazine leaves
a lot to be desired. :( Enjoy your new purchase~

The 39 was a great design, very comfortable to shoot for most people. Some 39's were unreliable with hollow point ammo, S&W corrected this with the 39-2. The early 39's also had an extractor that could break, this was corrected during the production run of the 39. I suggest trying several different brands and bullet styles in your pistol. 9mm's can be finicky when it comes to accuracy.

Elmer Keith sure had good things to say about them in Sixguns. I owned a 439 (an upgraded 39 with better feeding and firing pin safety, the second handgun I owned) and I won't argue with Elmer. You might ask the same Q over at the Smith and Wesson forum to see what the specialized fans have to say. They made a few changes to the 39 during its production: depending on exactly what you picked up - you might have a super-collectable gun. More likely, though, you just have a great shooter. Do ask over at the S&W forum, though, to make sure you're not sitting on a treasure!

I have a model 39-2. It is one of my top three favorite guns. It is in pristine condition and looks as good as the day it was made. As Stans says, it is a very comfortable gun to shoot and mine is very accurate. This is one I'm going to pass along to my Grandson. Great gun, hang onto it.

My first semi-auto pistol was a 39-2! Bought it used, didn't realize at the time that "abused" would have been a better descriptor. It was pretty well shot out and I didn't help matters any, but I enjoyed it until I sold it. A few years ago I got the hankering for another 39, so the local gunshop had a nice 439 for sale. It was in 98% condition and only $300, so it came home with me. This one has been a real joy to shoot. It is accurate with ammo it likes (horrible with ammo it hates) and 100% reliable.

One of my favorite Auto Pistols ever! Coudn't resist to post that pic again. Isn't she a beauty?

Hey Smith 39-2 fans! :D

Nothing is any nicer looking than a original S&W model
39-2 in nickel that has been well taken care of. I rank
the 39-2 as MY number 1 favorite 9m/m; YES-even
ahead of my beloved West German SIG-SAUER P228!

Hey Hog Rider out there in balmy Arizona~
Nice looking weapon and pic there, my friend.

*FootNote- if you have an original all steel model
39 you have a winner; whose value starts at about
$1500. With optional dust cover, + $75.

It was the first American made double action pistol, and the predecessor of the "Wonder Nines".
I truly wish i hadn't sold mine! :(

I bought an abused Model 39-2 a while back, for a song, and found it to be the most wonderfully accurate 9mm I own. I even started a thread searching for answers to this ......problem????

I'm not sure that I like a $130.00 pistol that outshoot's my Sig's, Belgian HP's, Glocks, and a couple of Barsto-tuned pieces as well. It seem's to do this with whatever I stuff in the mag to boot!

I have been taking it to the range every week, and just walking away looking at it and shaking my head. I'm about ready to dump all the Eouro Trash and stock up on more 39-2's:(

Lest we forget...

If it weren't for the debut of the S&W Model 39, there would be no .38 Special S&W Model 52! (Mine has the internal double-action lockout allen screw) :D
